The best course is to talk to your bank or credit union.  I would ask for a cashiers check in the agreed amount.  The transaction to take place in a bank if there is an issue of trust.  When the funds are cleared the title changes hands. They, banking institutions, have already invented this wheel and know better than the internet how to foil fraud.

..... and walk the check into YOUR Bank and have them verify its authenticity before you turn over the keys and the pink slip. There are many sophisticated forgeries out there. Cash is always a good option. Good luck. Mark

Agreed! Certified checks are widely forged nowadays. As John and Mark suggested, talk to your bank or credit union about how to safely do this transaction.
