Re: closed national parks Reply #1 – October 03, 2013, 10:53:34 am Yahoo Message Number: 142986We lucked out and completed our visit to Acadia National Park prior to the shutdown. The "Blackwoods" campground is heavily wooded and 5 miles from Bar Harbor. (Dry camping only $20 night) Now as we look at new destinations, for example, Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, we are faced with closed NPS website etc. Anyone familiar with Arkansas? We need camping recommendations for our Nov visit enroute back to Minnesota from the East Coast.Todd '99 RB and '02 Honda CRV
Re: closed national parks Reply #2 – October 03, 2013, 05:55:37 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142990Todd: Several Octobers ago we spent several days in Hot Springs AK (really delightful weather, tree colors and overall ambiance) and we stayed at the Cloud Nine Park. It's about 10 miles outside of Hot Springs, easy in and out and very pleasant.Do take the time to treat yourselves at one of the bath houses that offer a mineral bath...I believe we went to the Buckstaff and it was quite an experience, plus, if you don't already know how, you will learn how to properly tie a toga! While in Hot Springs there is also the very lovely Garvan Woodland Gardens which is operated by the UArkansas on a 210-acre sight on Lake Hamilton. As you head to Hot Springs along I-40, I hope you've got visits to Nashville and Memphis planned...a great spot to stay while visiting Memphis is the Tom Sawyer Mississippi River Park, which is right on the banks of the MS River in West Memphis, AR. While West Memphis has nothing that I've ever been able to discover worth seeing, the Park has a wonderful spot to view the River traffic. I hope we'll be staying there again this trip to see a few things in Memphis we missed the last time.TinaP 2006 MB "Wild Thing" approx 10 days to blast off for this year's rambleFrom: Todd J Fogelberg wrote....

Re: closed national parks Reply #4 – October 03, 2013, 09:41:20 pm Yahoo Message Number: 142995Tina, and others traveling in the area, a don't-miss stop is the National Civil Rights Museum, a grouping of historic buildings and a fabulous museum on the location where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated, the former Lorraine Motel. It's located at 450 Mulberry Street, and there is ample RV parking. Although no photographs are allowed, the historical and contemporary exhibits will be seared into your brain.Additional information at www dot civilrightsmuseum dot org. Also, If Memphis Blues music tugs at your soul, there are ample venues to satisfy both music and food appetites on Beale Street. And, if it's your "cuppa", the rather garish Graceland is also nearby.Have a wonderful trip.Lorna In Sunny Santa Cruz made2wander.blogspot.com
Re: closed national parks Reply #5 – October 04, 2013, 04:24:17 pm Yahoo Message Number: 143003We were affected but hopefully in a different way than most. My wife was furloughed. We went to Assateaque Island. The National Sea Shore was closed but the Maryland State campground was open.
Re: closed national parks Reply #6 – October 05, 2013, 07:17:18 pm Yahoo Message Number: 143019Some boat friends who are out at Powell say the lake is closed. All of the supposedly furloughed rangers are spending long days policeing the closure.
Re: closed national parks Reply #7 – October 05, 2013, 08:10:55 pm Yahoo Message Number: 143020Not all rangers are furloughed. For example, at Glen Canyon National Recreation area: "The shutdown has furloughed 125 employees and has affected more than 500 concessions employees. Fifty-one employees will remain on duty to provide security and emergency services".Eric Greenwell wrote, On 10/5/2013 4:17 PM:
Re: closed national parks Reply #8 – October 05, 2013, 09:01:37 pm Yahoo Message Number: 143022A friend just arrived at Quartzsite, and offers this status report: "The LTVAs are completely shut down. The only rigs in them are people who were here before the closure and had their passes already. He said they were afraid to kick people out. "However, the BLM 14-day areas are open. The camp host told me to just park anywhere. When the flag goes up on the pole, then the LTVAs are open. He said they are not going to hold to the 14-day rule during this time, if the shut-down lasts longer than that."It's still a little early, but it's like a ghost town, RV-wise. The camp host said this is already affecting the town, and the people here are really worried."Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels
