I don't think your response was out of line.
There are many 'home remedies' that are dreamed up by someone and then become "internet facts", including holding tank chemicals.
My conclusion is to use nothing or something actually made for the purpose.
Wal-Mart's holding tank chemicals are so cheap, there is no need to invent up a special concoction.
We do not use chemicals except when parked for several days in hot weather. My 'super-nose- wife lets me know if chemicals are needed.
 And to all who say their tanks do not stink, as one who has been on the roofs of more RVs than I care to think of, when you get near the vent pipes, they all stink. It's the degree of stinkiness that determines the need.
