Anyone use TrafficMaster Allure flooring to replace your carpet
Yahoo Message Number: 138067
For what it's worth I'm pulling out my original carpet a small section at a time. There are just too many staples for me to attempt to do the whole rig at once. I have much of the galley carpet removed, the bathroom carpet removed and I'm using throw rugs. I plan on painting the wood at some point.
I've also removed the carpet at the steps and added indoor/outdoor carpet and that works well.

When we first got our '84 the carpet smelled bad and we pulled it out the first day.
The plywood underneath is not pretty, and a new floor was high on the list, but the basic plywood underfloor is quite serviceable.

Enjoy it with throw rugs.

Ok.. One more question if you don't mind.. I know that most people take the time to remove all of the staples that hold the carpet in place.. In our rig, 99.9% of these are completely flush with the subfloor anyway, and would need to be dug out of the plywood.. Is that different than the others?  Is there any great reason to remove them if they're in that far?  I'm thinking of just leaving them in place beneath the Allure product as they should have zero impact on anything as far as I can tell.. Am I missing something?  I just don't want to spent hours digging out hundreds of these things if it's not absolutely needed' I did find several dozen smaller staples that were perhaps 3/8" or 1/2" in length which were removed as they were protruding but were exclusively beneath the cabinets where linoleum was installed below the cabinets'
Also -- how many of you installed it using some form of foam underlayment?  I'm guessing most do not but it seems like a good idea to help with dealing with the carriage bolts (cut a hole in the foam for the bolts) to ensure no lumps..  If you did use underlayment, did you glue it to the subfloor or just leave it floating like the allure?  In terms of underlayment products, I'm thinking of using a roll of cork underlayment available from Home Depot -- it comes in varying thicknesses such as 1/4"..  Here's the page on the HD website : http://tinyurl.com/bm6p5nr

I removed all staples and then used a foam underlayment.

In hindsight,...leave the staples.

Regarding traffic master flooring, I used a paper cutter for most cuts, it worked great!

Do you mean one of those ones with a table and the cutter on a track? I'm assuming not a pair of scissors.. :-)

Thanks George!  Staple removal seemed like something not worth doing -- I could see doing that IF I were laying the much thinner sheet linoleum which could show the staples possibly..

Like you, we only pulled those that were protruding. The rest we simply tapped well down even with the sub floor. I *did* use the underlayment  the install guide strongly suggested. We taped the sections of underlayment together, no overlaps.  It isn't glued down just cut to fit under the planks of floating flooring used.

The one I chose was the "Lisbon/Natural" by Home Legend. It is naturally anti-allergenic, natural elasticity resists dents, naturally mold, moisture and insect resistant, and is a natural thermal insulator--[it reduces transmission of sound, vibration, heat.] It is also fire resistant.

It has a twenty year guarantee. It is the "click lock" floating plank. The cork is applied to an HDF core construction, which is reuseable and environmentally friendly. The cork is a  renewable resource--they don't chop down the trees, just harvest the bark.

I am very happy with the results, some two years later.

It is not nearly as "hard"  --[there is a rating on various "hardness" of each flooring type]--as the Allure or other types. Cork breathes, so along with the rest of the above, that's what I wanted that w/the new flooring.
Even the thinner planks of cork still made opening some of the lower cabinet doors tight, so be sure to take that into account when you lay your new floor! These were 3/8 X 11 3/4 X 35 1/2... eight planks cover 23.17 sq. ft.

Thanks for the great info.. I think we'll stick with the Allure product since the price is pretty reasonable. I will also check to make sure proper clearance is available for the low to the floor drawers.  Thanks for that.. Hadn't thought about it..
