Plumbing vent cap

While on the roof I noticed a slight reddish stain alongside the metal vent cap at the toilet location.
The round cap appeared ok but when I touched the lip of the stack a rusted piece of it fell away onto the roof.
I see that they have plastic ones and metal. Other than UV working on the plastic is there any advantage to metal over plastic?

Why bother with a vent cap ? Ever see one on a house ? Just make sure the vent pipe is well sealed.

What!... Do you mean sealing off the vent or around the mounting? Anyway, the roof vent on a house collects rainwater and dumps it into the sewer system. On the rig, it would collect in the tanks, which have a limited enough capacity. Keep the cap.

I kinda figured that it would be clear to most that I meant the vent pipe penetration thru the roof be well sealed, sorry for my short sightedness.

How much water in your tank do you figure you'll get from a inch of rain ?"

A RV-style vent cap allow vertical movement of the vent pipe and is a proven item, used on millions of RVs.
I'm not too worried about a little rain water entering the vent pipe, being much more concerned about maintaining a constant seal between the vent pipe and the roof, a leak there could be costly.
RV vent caps are designed for the this application and are available at any RV store, I have even seen them at Wal-Mart.
It's a $3.00 item, splurge.

Rather than rain, maybe it has something to do with driving down the road at 60 mph, something you don't usually do in your stick-built home.
Could it sound like a big organ pipe, or force fumes into the vehicle?

I appreciate the responses. However, I was curious as to the pros and cons of plastic vs metal. I realize that UV works on plastic although I used 303 on other plastic items and I see what the downside is on the metal.
I am also puzzled on why this has rusted in the first place. I saw some comments elsewhere and someone stated that these should last the life of the rig. I don't see any evidence of rusting on the others.
Also, in case I wasn't clear it isn't the rounded cap that is rusting and breaking apart but the lip of the vertical pipe under the cap.

My suspicion is that the top couple inches of the pipe condenses water and is always moist.  Maybe not while driving.  They say rust never sleeps.
