Hello fellow Lazy Daze RVers.  Just a note to let you know of a "quick, temporary fix" for black tank odor wafting up from a toilet ball that is not totally sealed correctly.  I know most have a fix for this that is more permanent but when you are bouncing down the road and that lovely "perfume" begins to overpower you, here is an easy fix my husband, Jerry, hit on.  Using the liquid hand soap most of us have (the cheap stuff is fine) apply just four drops, N, S, E, and W, along the edge of the ball.  This stuff is viscous, not messy, and will not interfere with the open/close action of the toilet ball.  The small amount of soap flows down along the edge of the ball and provides a temporary seal.  We have been using this system for six months and have found no downside.  Hope this helps someone.  Be well and safe travels, Ann and Jerry  2010 27' Lazy Daze  http://fulltimeusa.wordpress.com/

Thanks Ann and Jerry, Just the info we needed.  Hope it works in this hot weather.
Happy Travels to you.  We are headed to Death Valley next week and onto RT 395 (Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, etc) fishing and kayaking our way towards Oregon and cooler climes.
Best, David and Nola

Well, ok, but...  it sounds like you have seals that need replacement.  Once you do this you will realize that it is a relatively easy job.  With a bit of water always in my bowl, I do not need to worry about any odors.  While the soap idea is not bad as a temporary treatment while waiting for new seals to arrive, I much prefer to fix something when it is not working right.  IMHO, putting dish soap on the dome to seal the bowl is like putting black tape over a check engine light that is on.

One thing that often stops the toilet from sealing properly is the build up of minerals deposits.  Before replacing the seal, it may be useful to pour a little vinegar into the bowl and see how quickly it drains.  Repeat a few times and you may find that it will eventually hold liquids.
