Re: VCR Replacement Reply #5 – March 12, 2013, 03:01:51 am Yahoo Message Number: 137319QuoteA/C would probably be fine. It could run on the same inverter as the TV. The most straightforward solution would be an external USB digital tuner for a computer. You can get them with with a remote control to change channels and enable record functions, etc, just like a VCR, but on your hard drive, like a DVR. You could then watch them on your computer, or on a TV/monitor, if your laptop has an HDMI port.Steve

It's a handy service since many local newspapers do not have TV schedules any more. If you happen to know when the shows you want to record are on, great but most of us have no way knowing the TV schedules unless we frequent the local TV station's or cable websites. We have used Tivo for years and always have many more hours of high-quality, off the air programs, recorded primarily off PBS, than what have time to watch.Larry

It will record over the air TV onto the hard drive and has an excellent interface and is very nice. http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products.en.html Jay

Re: VCR Replacement Reply #10 – March 12, 2013, 12:33:17 pm Yahoo Message Number: 137324Here's another vote for Elgato's EyeTV. Solid hardware; excellent DVR software. EyeTV is Mac-only, but there are similar devices for Windows users. The only drawbacks to this approach are that your computer must be running in order to record programs, and you'll need plenty of free hard disk space, because video recordings are large (from hundreds of MB to several GB, depending on whether you record HD content).Andy

Something that doesn't have a monthly fee? For about 3 years I have been using a Dish DTVPal Plus. This was a digital converter and DVR with I think a 250 gb hard drive. You can record two programs at once while watching another recorded program. It works only for OTA broadcasts. However they have stopped making them. They were also sold as a Channel Master CM-7000PAL ANTENNA. They were marketed through Sears also but don't know under what label. It has certainly worked well for us. I guess there wasn't a enough of a market for them. You might find a refurbished or used model if that is what you want.Jim C

The hardware works very well. The software is solid. It has lots of things I find annoying, but I can put up with them. The TV guide subscription is $19.95 per year; the first year is included.Howard
