I am not taking my 1995 LD in this time for an oil change but rather I am doing it myself.
What would you recommend I use in the 460 as far as weight and type (synthetic?) of oil and brand oil filter?

Check your FORD owners manual(if you have one).
Regular or synthetic will both do the job... it comes down to how much you want to spend.

I like Castrol Oil (5W20) and Fram filters.

I use only Mobil 1 and Purolator filters. The heavily advertised filters like Fram, don't filter as well!  Mobil1 does have special blends for higher mileage engines, etc.  Take a look at Wally World for a good selection at prices.

Purolator's Pure One has been my filter of choice due to the high rating s it has received during test. It is available at Pep Boys.
Mobil One and Napa Gold also rate well.
Fram has never had much of reputation among mechanics, I have seen Fram oil filters blow apart. When cutting them apart, the small amount of filter media is readily apparent when compared to high quality filters.
The cost difference between various filters is not significant compared to what they do
When it come to oil, brand name dino oils are fine as long as the recommended change intervals are observed. Oil quality has significantly improved over the last few decades to the point where they are all good.
Ford's recommended Motorcraft oil is part synthetic and is a great choice, at a good price http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Motorcraft-5-lts-SAE-5W-20-Synthetic-Blend-motor-oil/_/N-255s?itemIdentifier=835496 Synthetics, such as Mobil 1, are good too but changing at the recommended intervals does not take advantage of the longer change intervals that synthetics offer before breaking down.
No matter what oil you use, follow the Owner's Manual recommendation on oil weight and change intervals...the factory knows best.

How did you test this, Glen?

Andy Baird
There was a fascinating amateur study done by an individual who actually cut open most of the available brands of oil filters, and compared things like quality of design, construction, materials, and features. Fram came out well down in his ratings, and he detailed all the problems that would affect its performance. For a garage research project, it was pretty impressive.
It was also quite awhile back, and like the 'Shell Oil' ding, it likely no longer applies to the current crop of filters.

This fellow reports on a trip through the Fram filter test facility that changed him from anti-Fram to pro-Fram.

Seems oil filters can provoke as much emotion as politics, judging by the number of sites reporting tests!

Eric, my take-away from the article you referred to was that Fram has improved their quality over what it was 5 years ago.  I saw nothing that compared its quality with any other filter.
I will say up front that I know almost nothing about oil filters, so I am not taking a position on which is better.  All I am saying is that the article in question does not make Fram a good choice.  All it means is that newer Fram filters are better than older Fram filters.

I was trying to make the point that it's difficult to find a "trustworthy, independent" tester, as emotions run high, and my usual resource (Consumer Reports) does not have any tests of oil filters; even so, I think we can get much more out the person's report than "Fram is better now".
He says he has paid a lot of attention filter tests by various people over many years, which was the basis for his disdain for Fram; now, he's changed his mind completely after hearing from their engineers the reason for the design of their filters, and seeing the thoroughness of their testing.

OK, I had a Fram filter fail and dumped all of the oil on the freeway on the V8 in my Ford pick-up, granted it was a few years ago, but I could buy an awful lot of Purolator filters for what a used engine cost me!
