Mounting a small safe
Yahoo Message Number: 135805
Good Morning!
I am planning to install a small safe in our RB.  It's similar in size to those small safes you find in hotels (about 18" long), and it mounts at its base.  I have been considering mounting it in the clothes closet, but the wood on the bottom of the closet is a bit thin.  Has anyone ever mounted a small safe in an LD, and if so, where did you end up mounting it?  I wasn't able to find anything in the archives on this particular subject.

Thanks much!

It is pretty hard to mount a safe in an inconspicuous spot - let alone a secure one where it can't be easily ripped out. What we and many others do is find a location that is hidden but accessible, for stashing cash and valuables - someplace that you locate with a lengthy inspection, and possibly some minor craftwork, that a thief will not discover in a fast search.

---- I don't know where one would do this in a 24' and/or 27' model with a rear bath (and Steve ain't sayin'! ;-) ), but in a TK or an MB, at least one owner I know has made hidey-holes at each end of the upper rear cupboard but cutting and fitting (and finishing to match the other woodwork) 1/4" pieces of plywood that fit snugly into the space, allowing the area behind to be used to hide whatever.  These inconspicuous little doors look like they are OEM, and the "pull" to open them is a small piece of ribbon stapled to the backside of the insert on the rear corner and brought to the front; the pull isn't really noticeable.
Many people use the reasonably well-camouflaged compartment at the head of the overcab bed to hide valuables, and, I suppose that a flat safety-deposit-type box could be stored (or mounted?) in there; I'd be sure that the box placement would allow the compartment lid to close before I started drilling holes, though!

As ever, YMMV.

I mounted a Tuffy Compact Security Box http://www.tuffyproducts.com/p-100-compact-security-lockbox.aspx under the dinette storage behind the passenger seat.  It is located in the aft street side corner of the storage compartment. This is a Mid Bath. It is secured via four through the floor bolts. If you haven't purchased a safe yet take a look at this one.  Any thief would be better off stealing the coach rather than trying to open or rip this box out.

Good luck in finding a mounting location in your RB.

We have an RB with a safe mounted underneath the rear facing dinette seat. The safe is bolted through the floor but mounting it with lag bolts would probably suffice. It is very difficult to get

I used to own a Chinook RV that had a built in  floor save that was welded to the RV frame. It came up underneath the dinette and was hidden by a  floor tile and  carpet. This made it very secure and hard to find. Perhaps you can find a location in your LD that would be suitable for this kind of installation. Lutz
