2004 MB metallic type vibration

I have a metallic type vibration sound that seems to originate under the driver side dashboard area. I notice it on accelerating at around 25 mph up to about 40 mph when it seems to disappear. It is not a real loud noise but is nevertheless audible and "any" foreign noise is undesirable. I am not sure if the increased engine noise or road noise simply masks the metallic vibration noise.  At first, I thought it was perhaps a vibrating heater type metallic fins (?).  I have probed around underneath the dash but space is very limited and confined and so far have not found a loose bracket or screw. I had my mechanic road test our LD but he could not find anything (in fact, he couldn't even hear the noise?). Naturally, problems seem to disappear when the mechanics around! Any similar experience from the many LD folks out on the road? Cptnmel

Sounds like something I once had... look for a loose wheel weight rattling around inside a wheel cover.

Well I used to be pretty good at quantum mechanics but thats another story.  Several of us have noticed the shield on the tail pipe, muffler assembly making a noise like you mention.  I think you can fix it with a big screwdriver or channel lock pliers (assuming thats the source).

This sounds a loot like a heat shield vibrating. Not familiar with that specific chassis but I have had several different Ford vehicles where a weld would break on a heat shield around the catalytic converter. My usual solution has always been to get a large hose type clamp and go around the whole converter. they are available in many sizes and you can always tie 2 or even more together for extra length. This type of noise is very dependent on the size of the piece with a corner lose and often exhibits resonant tendencies where it buzzes/ rattles  more or less depending on the engine rpm. In almost all cases when ignored another corner weld would break and then another to where the wold shield fell off.
This is rather easy to check if you are able to safely investigate under the vehicle with it running. Or even without the engine running tapping on likely looking shields with a rubber mallet or like device.
