We have about a month or so to tour the southern states.  Need to be in Tempe AZ March 29 and Conway AR Apr 28 for a wedding.  So we thought we would wonder around the south for that month.  Any one have any special places we need to see ?  Will be going Gulf states, SC, TN, AK.

I know the area between the two pretty well. I would suggest heading to Albuquerque for a few days, then down to Carrizozo (Valley of Fires for a stop), White Sands, Carlsbad, Guadalupe Mountains and then down to Big Bend for at least ten days. Spring is usually glorious in BB and it is a rather unique and wonderful place that is only seen by those who make a long detour. Plan to do a raft trip on the Rio Grande too. Then east to Junction and up through the Texas Hill Country to Dallas (any backroad route will do) and on to Arkansas. Conway is north of Little Rock. A bit west of Conway is Arkansas 7 which goes through Hot Springs (which I think is pretty neat) and the windy road is IMO the jewel of Arkansas. Take it from Caddo Valley up to Russelville and then go east to Conway and then go back to Russelville and finish the route north - or do it all and then go back south to Conway.

Good luck! Jay

Don't miss the hot spring in Big Bend.  Where you can soak in the hot spring and at the same time dangle your hand in the Rio Grande.  Camp at Rio Grand Village.  Dry or full hookup. Your choice.

~~~~~~~~~ Hi Lenore and Gary!
 I'm wondering if I read those dates correctly.  You could easily spend a month in Tennessee alone (Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Great Smoky Mountains NP, Museum of Appalachia near Oakridge, white water rafting the Ocoee River Olympic course, Natchez Trace, the Blue Ridge Parkway, among many other high points).  The Ozarks in Arkansas are best visited at a leisurely pace; wildflowers and dogwood would be in full bloom.
 Big Bend NP has been recommended by several folks here.  I endorse that suggestion and while you're in Texas, I'd encourage visits to the Hill Country, Fredericksburg (Dooley's Hardware, the Admiral Nimitz Museum), the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Balmorea Hot Springs, Marfa lights, San Antonio, McDonald Observatory, and of course the Texas Gulf (So. Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Mustang Island).  You could spend an entire month just in Texas and never see a fraction of it or even travel the same road twice!
 No matter what you ultimately decide though, you will have some wonderful adventures on the "trail," and I'll wager you'll want to return doe  longer period to savor that part of the country again.
