AK again

I just sent a note on my views of whether to take a toad to AK or not.
Just saw mention of the AK ferry system and we also took the ferry from Haines to Prince Rupert getting off at Juneau, Petersburgh, Wrangell, and Ketchikan spending 3-4 days at each location.  Not having a toad was no problem.  The main roads are paved and there were plenty of parking spots at each location.  Even at Juneau we parked for free at the State tourism building.  Boondocked too at all but Juneau where we camped at Mendenhall Lake.  Next time we will get off at Sitka too.
I am not an off roader though and there are lots of dirt roads in AK.  AS ever, YMMV but if we ever go again the car stays in the lower 48.  Dirt roads did not stop us.  We spent a week driving across the Denali highway from Cantwell to Paxson, drove over the Top of the World highway, etc.
No, we did not attempt the haul road to Prudhoe Bay.

Have a great trip, toad or no toad.

Thank you Mike for that info. We want to hit those islands and we don't really need to do the off roader thing. We do like dirt roads though. But with our 24ft rig, if we aren't towing, we can get around tight places pretty well.

"if we ever go again the car stays in the lower 48" For those of us traveling in the US with our toad, any suggestions as to where to store before entering Alaska, either in the USA or Canada?   Thanks,  Gale

I second what RV Mike says about leaving the toad behind for Alaska.  My wife and I spent four months on the Alaska trip via the Cassier Highway two years ago. We had two 14 foot kayaks and a canoe on top of our 1998 MB LD. We especially loved using the Provincial Parks in Northern B.C. at Meziadin and Boya where the kayaking and fishing were outstanding. There's nothing like seeing wildlife on the lake shore edges from the cockpit of a kayak.  (See my blog of the B.C. section to get an idea at: www.highwaytoadventure.blogspot.com...June postings.) Given the condition of the roads and the high expense of gas in Canada, I was very happy that we didn't bring our CRV.  Our bicycles worked out fine when we needed them. Surprisingly, there are numerous areas for bicycling with separate bicycle trails that parallel the highways, no doubt used for snowmobiles in the winter.
Have a great trip to Alaska with or without the toad.
