route suggestions
Yahoo Message Number: 128017
Hi everyone; Several people are asking for route suggestions so I will join in.
We will leave southern CA by mid Feb as we have to be in NYS by mid March for the birth of a granddaughter.
However, I have to go by way of Sioux Falls, SD to renew my drivers license.  Bad timing!  I usually do not use interstates but on this trip I will do so.  What the weather will be like remains to be seen but that is the problem.  It will be my luck to get hit by snowstorms, etc.
As of now I am planning on taking I-10 to Deming, NM.  Then cutting north on I-25 to Denver.  I-76 to I-80 across Nebraska and then I-29 north to Sioux Falls.
If the weather is bad cutting north on I25 thru NM might be rough.  Any other suggestions?  I could cut NE to Amarillo, TX and thence thru KS but there are toll roads going that way and storms on the prairies can be rough too.

From Sioux Falls I have not worked on a route yet.  Will depend on weather.  I usually cut into Canada and might do so again.  Weather along the Great Lakes might be milder than Chicago and much less traffic.

Suggestions???
BTW, we had a fantastic 6 month trip to AK.  I strongly recommend such an adventure for everyone.

Can't help replying, I've driven across country lots of times, and would not attempt anything but a southern route

Hello Mike:
Given that the weather during your trip is unknowable until about ten days before your departure, your tentative route is as good as any subject to review just before blast off. I-40 east to Oklahoma City then straight north to Sioux Falls is another option.
As you certainly know, the interstates tend to be your best bet during times of snowy weather because they are among the first to be plowed and first to be reopened so all interstates is a good idea.
. I'd pack some food, water and warm cloths just in case you were forced to spend an unplanned day or so, along the highway. In March of 2005, or there about, I spent the better part of two days "camped" along I-40 not far east of Albuquerque. I had a bathroom, hot coffee, food and a place to sleep. What else does a guy need?? It's all part of the adventure.
During a recent trip in well below freezing temperatures, I put a gallon of RV antifreeze in the grey(the shower drain in particular) & black tanks, ran the hot water heater, kept the water pump access door open and made some vent covers for each of the four roof vents.  All was well when I finally got to warmer weather.

Enjoy your trip.
