From time to time the question pops up, "Why doesn't Lazy Daze build a small RV on the Sprinter chassis?" My friend Judie pointed out a good example of why not--the new Winnebago 24M:

http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/Reviews/Motorhome-Reviews/2012-Winnebago-24M-Class-C-Motorhome/>

Buried in this review are some interesting numbers:
"Overall, the 24M has a wet weight of 9,880 pounds, and allows the loading of 1,150 pounds of passengers and cargo before exceeding its gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr) of 11,030 pounds."
But it's not that simple. Subtract 300 pounds for two passengers, 100 pounds for the optional air conditioner, 200 pounds for the optional generator, 50 pounds for the optional awning, and you're left with 500 pounds of usable cargo capacity for your belongings. By comparison, a 24' Lazy Daze with two passengers has 3,000 pounds of usable cargo capacity.
Did I mention that the Winnie has a flocked-vinyl air mattress that has to be inflated every night and deflated every morning? (Undoubtedly an attempt to save weight.) And that the overcab bed sleeps only one adult, but you can't use it if you're using the main bed, because its ladder can't be deployed when the air mattress is in use?
One more thing: the Winnebago 24M costs $116,000 with awning and 3.6 Kw generator, but without air conditioner. That's $36,000 more than a 24' Lazy Daze with standard air conditioner. And I'm not even going to talk about the difference in build quality.
So... you can spend $36,000 more for 2,500 pounds less cargo capacity and no A/C. Any takers? ;-)

I should mention that this also answers another common question: "Why doesn't Lazy Daze build rigs with slideouts?" The Winnebago 24M's full-wall slideout undoubtedly subtracts hundreds of pounds from its cargo capacity, while weakening the rig's structure and greatly increasing the likelihood of leaks, mechanical failures and other nasty problems.

$116,000 is the MSRP, but dealer cost is about 70% of that ($81,000), leaving him a LOT of room for dickering. Typical selling prices, according to acquaintances with Winnebago Sprinters, are 75% of the MSRP, or in this case, around $87,000. That 70% dealer cost is very common for RVs in this price range, fooling people who are accustomed to car dealers with a typical dealer cost of 88% or so.
Not that even that price is likely low enough to entice anyone out of their Lazy Daze....
