tire question
Yahoo Message Number: 127707
I am thinking of buying a 2007 LD in CA.  The RV has spent most of it nonworking life indoors and has very low mileage. I live in Va. I am thinking of taking an extra day to replace the tires before the trip because of the age.  I am not know the manufacture date of the tires but believe them to be original equipment.
The argument against replacement is that the tires are only just getting near the age to replace, been sheltered from the sun, and if I replace the tires close to home I will be able to build a relationship the the dealership.
Mostly I am thinking of doing it before the trip.  But I now squat about rv's so I am looking for input from the clan.

John,
I think most folks on this list will tell you to get new tires before the trip and to go to the "tireman" to get them, along with his valve stems.

I'm not going to dispute that as probably the best solution to your dilemma, but let me tell you what I would do.
I'd have a good discussion with the seller about any problems he/she has had with the tires, then I would have a good look at them to see if there is any obvious cracking or any other problem areas.  If all looked and sounded good, I'd probably drive it home (keeping the speed under control) and bring it to my favorite tire dealer near home to have them deal with them.   I'm not recommending you do it this way; just telling you how I would handle the situation.
If you do decide to buy new tires before the trip back home, make sure you can get service on them somewhere near where you live before you make that rather major investment.

I agree with Rich. I've gone through two sets of Michelins, about 7 years on each set, and they were in good condition but getting low on tread when I changed them. If it's Michelin's on this rig, I'd have no concern about driving them for another year or two, assuming your favorite tire person inspects them and sees no problems.

I'm with you, John. It's less then 3,000 miles from CA to VA. Let a local tire shop you know and trust, do the work. Goodyear has a superior RV tire worth looking into. It's the G947RSS.
The solid valve stem extensions, if the LD you're considering does not already have them, can be easily installed by any decent tire store.
Borg is the manufacturer of the solid stems.
Either way, I would have a road service contract with Coach-Net in place.

Enjoy your trip.
