Wave 3 install location in 30 IB

Hello everybody!  Happy Holidays! In order to hava a nice quiet warm RV Christmas, we ordered  a Wave3 heater and a quick disconnect kit. We have tried to decide where abouts in the coach to place it. We are stuck. Nothing seems quite right when one involves the disconnect and the valve behind it.
So. I would love to hear from those hat have 30 footers and mid baths with Wave 3 s. Where did you put it and why? Thanks Lydia

Permanent mount under the stove in '02MB ala Andy & Skylark.  Do something to protect wood above.  I used aluminum angle on the wood and some sheet metal flashing on top of unit to divert heat.

If you're going  to do a fixed mount cat heater in a midbath, below the stove is probably the best location--it takes the chill off the dinette area in the morning. But in retrospect, I wish I'd gone with a flexible hose setup as some others have done, in order to allow more flexibility in placing the heater.

Never too late to change.
We have a long hose that is coiled behind the passenger seat when not in use. It can reach to just past the BR door. [This is a MB] That's nice for dressing etc. Mostly it radiates from the area just aft of the Ford seats. That's out of our way and it keeps the dinette cozy.

The heater just fits, vertically, into the dinette storage bin.
Based on advise here, we made a storage bag for it to keep dust out.

Hi Lydia, Although not quite the same (or even similar) configuration), it doesn't hurt to think outside the circle!  In my RB, I have a Wave 6 with a long hose connected directly to the propane tank.  The hose gives me a *lot* of flexibility for placement of the heater:  front, middle, back of the rig.  (You might also consider a permanently-installed Wave 3 and a second, portable, Wave 3 on a leash.  (You don't mind if I just go ahead and spend your money, right??!!!)

Mike Sylvester did my installation.

Stay warm....happy holidays!

I have an '04 30'IB! I've thought I'd like a Cat heater but where to put it??? It seems that there is no ideal place, actually no good place at all. Therefore I gave up and depend solely on the furnace.
One idea did come to mind, fabricating brackets on both sides of the toilet door so that you could face it forward when needed and also backwards to warm the bedroom. That arrangement would require a flexable hose and probably that quick disconnect.

Good luck, and if you figure it out, let me know.

We had a propane fired radiant heater in our RB.  It was mounted on the door under the sink.  With the door closed it aimed heat at the dinette.
With the door open it aimed heat at the sleeping area.  Very convenient.
Looking at a 30 ft floor plan it's not clear if any door would be as good a place to attach such a heater.

I installed the ball latch valve near the furnace heat outlet at the bottom of the main closet in our '04 MB.  I use their hose assembly (6' ?) and feet and can aim our Wave 6 heater to the rear or the front (or angled) as needed.  We keep the heater in the shower when not in use and if we know we won't use it on a trip we leave it home.

Lydia,
We also have the 30 footer.  We installed an on/off valve  underneath the kitchen sink.  We removed the screws on the screen, sawed them off flat and glued them back in and it's now held on with velcro.  The propane hose comes  out next to the propane alarm under the stove.  This allows us to use the heater either facing the living room, or we can stretch it out and put it facing the bedroom.  When not in use, the hose pushes back in to the area behind the propane alarm and is virtually invisible.
We love this set up, it's worked for us for a long while.   We also keep a silicone sheet we use under the heater, because it gets warm right in front when in use.  I don't think it's dangerous, but it makes me feel better.

I too had considered modifying the screen door in a similar fashion. Velcro here needs to be stapled. The glue softens in the heat too easily. And since the screen wood is so thin a staple would likely not hold. Was considering magnets.
Do you disconnect the hose from the heater before puting the hose under the counter? If so with the QD hardware? Ergonomics is a concern for us. Doesn't the hose get trod on while cooking? Or get too hot with the heater aimed at your calves?

We have a 30'. Installed a Wave 3 with a 7 foot hose and quick disconnect. The connection is installed running under the stove and coming out of the cabinet wall behind the barrel chair next to the stove. The quick connect is what protrudes from the wall.

Lydia, we have the 30' with pullout dinette and had the on/off valve for our Wave 6 installed under the bench seat behind the driver's seat.  It taps into the propane tank fittings just under that area. The Wave 6 is on a flexible hose that reaches into the kitchen area.  Mostly, when we use it I place it on an old cutting board between the cab seats, just to the back of them.  This provides heat in the lounge and back to the kitchen area if not too cold out.  The hose protrudes from the storage compartment when in use; the compartment door is slightly ajar when the hose is in use.  the coiled up hose and Wave 6 with factory cover are stored underneath the bench seat when not in use.  I would not permanently mount it in the 30'.

"The connection is installed running under the stove and coming out of the cabinet wall behind the barrel chair next to the stove. The quick connect is what protrudes from the wall."
An important point that needs to be emphasized is the need for easily accessible shut-off valve. I would not install a quick-disconnect outlet without a shut-off, close by.
Modern propane disconnects are dependable but the possibility still exist that leaks can develop if one the disconnect's o-rings gets a cut or nick. They usually leak when the heater has been disconnected.
For safety reasons, part of my 'Best Practices' is to leave the gas valve in the shut-off position, when not in use.
When installing the new outlet, make sure to check for leaks in the various propane line fittings with a commercial leak detecting fluid.
http://www.homedepot.com/buy/cleaning/drain-openers/rectorseal/8-oz-better-bubble-gas-leak-detector-65796.html>  It is superior to soapy water, being very thick and long-lasting A manometer can also be used to test for leaks but I find the fluid better able to 'see' smaller leaks since it stays in place for hours and days, able to produce bubbles 24 hours or more, later.

--- Just adding an additional point to Larry's advice and caveats: make sure that the installer of any propane device is a knowledgeable, experienced, *qualified* tech; in any device using LPG, there are many installation "steps" that could lead to dangerous consequences if each is not done properly and professionally.

"Velcro here needs to be stapled. The glue softens in the heat too easily."
Try low profile 3M Dual Lock tape, available at Target, Lowe's, and Home Depot, among other places. Has much better gripping power than Velcro, and does NOT ooze off in hot weather.

"Was considering magnets."
Today's powerful rare-earth magnets are a good solution for many jobs. Walmart's craft department and Michael's, Hobby Lobby, et al. sell small, thin (14mm x 2mm) but very strong neodymium magnets in four-packs. Use strong double-sided tape to mount the magnet (e.g., 3M Exterior Mounting Tape, which is similar to 3M VHB), and mate with a steel washer or a small piece cut from a tin can. (Don't try to pair up two of these magnets, or you'll never get them apart!

Kate, would you provide pictures? particularly the shutoff valve location and the hose in use?

Thanks, Richard

Richard,
I'll try to get pictures in the next couple of days, but for now, know that when we remove the screen under the sink (velcro has worked for us so far, but magnets sound fine also) the cut off valve is just to the right  of the opening.  We turn it off and on every time we use the heater.  Then, the hose (which I believe is a standard propane/heater hose) comes out just below and to the left of the propane alarm.  When not in use, the entire hose shoves behind the paneling and hardly shows.

But like I say, I'll get pictures in the next day or two.

Just a note to anyone who might be interested, I've detailed our Wave 3 installation in our 30 foot twin.  It can be found at the blog Under the heading "Our Catalytic Heater".
