I know all the California roads are in terrible shape these days, I live here!  We are planning to drive the length of the state soon, and I wondered if anyone can tell me if one highway is any better than the other?  I believe there is more to see from the 99, more towns.  Any words of wisdom?

Judy, Elsie or Cally, whatever...

Take I-5 for speed, 99 for rural atmosphere or 395 for scenic beauty.

And if you have unlimited time - take highway 1 for sheer beauty. Just don't expect to find places to camp/stop easily.

I live in the Central Valley and drive both 5 and 99.  5 is in better shape and is faster, 99 has more farming/rural flavor.  I do agree - 395 for the beauty (I grew up in Bishop and know that route as well.)

Judy, I travel from Palm Desert to Chico several times a year 600 miles each way. Here is my take on the 2 highways:  Hwy 99 has been revamped and there are not as many roads which cross 99 ; better places to just stop and take it easy.  I have found cheaper fuel prices on 99, more parks and rest areas including one on the southbound 99 just south of Tulare that has a dump station.  Restaurants and the traffic doesn't move as fast.   When travelling I-5 you will find that about 200 miles (maybe a little) more of racetrack driving.  Two lanes fewer rest areas and the restaurants & fuel stops are more difficult to access.
My preference is 99 .  I have been travelling those roads since I was a child and since the I-5 corridor opened from Bakersfield to Stockton.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget about the other differences -- smell!  For those of you with older model LD's that can't seal off the vent system, the I5 past the 99 split (heading north) can be rather stinky at times with all of the umm.. cow poop.. It'll take your breath away at times.. I don't recall that being an issue on the 99 but it's been quite a few years since I've been on the 99.. We were on I5 last week and the right (slow) lane can be rather beaten up by the trucks so I like to drive in the left lane if possible to avoid potholes and whatnot..

Just my $0.02 worth..

Yep, that is the good old Harris Ranch feed lots on I-5!  VERY VERY STINKY!  I always try to speed up through the few miles.

Good point Rick. Actually, that was the 1st thing that came to mind.
It can be pretty malodorous on I-5

Here is one of the best reasons to take 99, all the wineries in and around Lodi.  Lots of great places to stop and do some wine tasting.
They are also a lot more friendlier than their Napa counterparts.

Dale, Hwy 101 is great except going thru Santa Barbara.  However if one is trying to go north it is very time consuming.

I'm curious as to why Hwy 101 isn't being suggested as a potential route? In my recent experience, Hwy 99 was a bone jarring (right lane) nightmare with huge potholes. Hwy 5 is fast (faster than I want to go) and boring. 395 is by far the most beautiful in my opinion. Lately though, 101 is in very good repair and very scenic. It is the route I prefer.

I'm with you Dale and if not in a hurry, my preference would be to take 395 or 101 either south to north or the reverse.  I just zipped through Santa Barbara in the early afternoon last Wed and had no problems or slowdowns whatsoever.  There is some road construction, but traffic moved right along without a single hitch!
And, for anyone else considering the coastal route, it was in the high sixties today, 5MPH winds, absolutely clear and gorgeous; the campgrounds are uncrowded; and the roads are being improved here and there and are in much better condition than either I-5 or 99.  (I did travel sections of both highways last week.)  Oh yes, and if one takes 101 (El Camino Real), you'll find lots of wineries and interesting places to stop along the way -- and very few "smelly" places!

Well, if time is your concern, Hwy 5 is the way to go. Booooring. I'm retired. I take my time and smell the roses not the cows. Dale.
