Larry mentioned getting pictures on to the iPad.  I just ordered a device that plugs in to my iPad/iPhone, allowing me to transfer items from an SD card, $15 from PhotoJoJo

Another possibility, albeit a more expensive one: Apple's $29 "Camera Connection Kit" (http://tinyurl.com/2ajzxt6) not only lets you read SD cards, but also connect USB devices such as digital cameras, keyboards, microphones, and MIDI keyboards. I've used it with all of the above, and it works very well.

Andy:
Could this be the missing USB port for the Iphone?  Could you possibly use a printer?

I *think* the Apple Camera Connection Kit is supposed to work with the iPhone 4 and 4s, as long as you have iOS 5 installed, but don't hold me to that. I haven't tried it with my iPhone 4... just never had the need. I have used the kit to read SD cards into my iPad, connect a MIDI keyboard to play GarageBand instruments, connect a high-quality USB microphone for voice recordings into GarageBand, and I think I hooked up my camera once.

"Could you possibly use a printer?"
As far as I know, the Camera Connection Kit only supports input devices. On the rare occasions when I want to print directly from the iPhone or iPad, I use Printopia, which turns my iMac into a wireless print server. But most of the time I'll just transfer a file to the Mac wirelessly via Dropbox, and print it from there if necessary.
And as I said, it's seldom necessary... the longer I spend as a fulltimer, the less interested I am in printing out paper copies of anything I can keep in electronic form (with multiple backups, of course).

Speaking of backups, I'm wondering if you keep a full backup "off-site", and if so, how do you do that?  If not, I would think you are risking a MH fire that could destroy all backups

I do, but it's probably not a good idea to post the details in public where anybody could read them. I will say that I back up every night (a full bootable clone of my computer's hard drive) to a small portable hard drive, and a couple of times a year to a different drive that resides in my storage room. These backups typically take about 15-20 minutes, because the software i use (SuperDuper) only copies files that have changed since the last backup.

Michelle,
I do the same thing, but there's also a nice little app called PhotoSync.
You put it on your device (iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad) and also on your computer if you like.  Then, if both devices are on the same wifi network, photos transfer wirelessly.  It's very slick.
The Photojojo device will read either an SD or CF card (there is a separate device for each card), and they also have a USB port.  Mine was mailed yesterday and I think it will take the whole iPad/iPhone to a new level.
