Camping around The John Day Fossil Beds and Painted Hills of Oregon
Yahoo Message Number: 125991
Hi everyone, We're traveling in Oregon and wanting to visit the John Day Fossil Beds and Painted Hills Monuments. I'm not finding much about camping, dry or otherwise, and I'm hoping someone from the group can let me know what might be available in the general area. I'd be looking for camping somewhere between town of Prince and John Day. Trying to get closer than 30 miles away. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Dave and Mary

There is a campground (USFS, I believe) not too far south of the US-26/Bridge Creek Rd junction, Ochoco Divide.  A little farther south are three Sno-Parks where you can stay.  We haven't checked out the Sno-Parks so I don't know anything about these, but we've stayed at various other Sno-Parks in both Oregon and Washington during the summers.  There may also be someplace in Mitchell where you can stay...we haven't checked out RV parks in town.

Thanks Linda and Earl. Sounds like there won't be much trouble finding something.

There is a very nice state park called Clyde Holliday about 30 miles east of the monument area on Hwy 26.  Here's the park's' web page:

We've stayed there a couple of times.  It's right on the river and the grounds are attractive.  They have water/electric sites and a dump station.
