Loose steering

A few weeks ago someone asked for advice to improve a two inch play in the steering. I tried to find it in the archives and couldn't. Since I've had the same problem since I drove DD home from Las Vegas (in Dec. of '07), I wanted to hear if that someone had found the problem. I did try Roadmaster's new device but that hasn't helped. I should have gone with Safety Plus or Steersafe. Anyway, IF that someone found a 'fix' for the problem, would you please share it?

 If you have 2" of play in the wheel, you need to get it to a mechanic ASAP. Play indicates loose parts.
Our 2003 LD will turn if you move the steering wheel 2 inches in either direction.
Be aware that Ford's twin-I-beam suspension does have a different feel to it compared to most cars and light trucks.
Check you LD's owner's manual for Steve's hints on steering.

Hi Judy, The steering will feel sloppy if the front Ford factory sway bar bushings are worn…specifically the lower bushings that attach the sway bar to the I-Beams.
 Your best bet for this repair would be your Ford dealer as the replacement part if needed will need to be ordered from them. The old bushings are a bear to remove but your Ford dealer will be familiar with the job.
 You can have them check for other worn steering components while there…just make sure to have the lower sway bar bushings inspected as some times it is overlooked even at the dealer.
