smashed driver's sideview mirror

Coming into Indiana last night, on narrow country road, some bozo in a HUGE [hummer???] truck decided he needed my side of the road as well as his...result? He smashed into my rear view driver's side mirror with HIS side mirror...the basic parts seem OK but the glass/mirror is gone.

It is also Thanksgiving and everyone is gone....do any of you know if the glass is replaceable, or do I need the whole "head" piece, or, the whole arm and all? I'm here w/my 90 yr. old Mom, and we HAVE to be back in Kansas by the 5th of Dec. so she can fly home to AZ. I can't drive without that mirror~~~!!!!

If I 'can' replace the mirror part alone, any ideas as to where to look/go for the replacement? I'm in a strange city, with non-RV relatives...
...and it's pouring!

You might try a glass shop (windows). They may be able to cut mirror glass to fit and glue it in. Should not be expensive.

Gini, sorry to hear about your mishap. You can buy a replacement glass directly from Velvac for about $55 (less, if you don't need the heated mirror).
An auto glass shop could probably come up with a quick fix--check the Yellow Pages or Google Maps.
If you're handy with a glass cutter (I always carry one :-), you could buy a cheap wall mirror at Walmart and cut it to shape. One caution: don't try to mount it with silicone caulk. The acetic acid fumes emitted as it cures will dissolve the silvering right off the back of the mirror! I made this mistake once, many years ago. Goop or Liquid Nails would be a better bet.
Worst case: go to Walmart, buy an 8" x 8" flat hand mirror, and attach it with duct tape. That'll get you home. :-)

Gini,

I had a similar problem when I got too close to a toll taking booth. If you look at your broken mirror, you should see the plastic retention ring that holds the mirror
