Roof Top Cargo Bags?
Yahoo Message Number: 118238
I'm thinking about trying a soft sided roof top cargo bag along with the luggage rack on top of my LD.  Can anyone offer any tips tricks or advice?
The main goal is to carry a few fairly light items that are stinky (wet dirty clothes), covered in sand, or don't fit well in one of the MB compartments (boogie boards, kids beach toys).

Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

The models I'm looking at are along these lines: http://tinyurl.com/398jhh4

DO NOT mention this idea around the Mother Ship, Ed Newton would pitch a fit which could be heard all the way to the east coast.

I had the same thought, Steve.  And speaking of Ed Newton, anyone know how he's doing?

The crossbars on a car's roof are much closer together than the the ones on the roof of your LD so the tie downs will need to be lengthened.
There a good chance that the wind will get under front of the bag, causing all sorts of rooftop mayhem. You could glue d-hooks to the roof for additional tie downs, especially at the front.

The factory does not recommend carrying heavy weights on the roof so try to keep the weight down.
Another possible storage solution is a rear bumper tray.

Larry's idea is certainly the way to go! Thule (and lots of other companies) make waterproof nylon, etc. Storage bags that fit cargo hitch carriers.
Don't forget to keep the weight down since it is at the far rear overhang of your RV (weight distribution)!

I can only imagine that frequently climbing a ladder to place wet clothes in a rooftop carrier would get tiring (and old) really quickly!

Larry's idea is really the way to go!

Thanks Guys.  A rear bumper tray is a good idea, but we carry a bike rack

Just a couple more ideas...I have a Hitch Haul from Masterbuilt and they show a bike rack that attaches to their platform...or...Cabela's shows a double receiver that accepts more than one accessory.
On our former RV, a Fleetwood, we had a big cargo box on top. I kept light weight items up there, but it leaked and I sure got tired of going up and down the ladder to retrieve things. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find the right solution.
