carbon monoxide detector

Hi

I recently came to find out that it is beleived that the CO detector/alarm in the LD should be replaced every six years. I didn't realize that. Or maybe I did know when I got the rig 10 years ago,  and had forgotten. Very likely.

Anyway there is no date at all on my Costar detector.
There is no statement in the Costar owner's manual stating this either. There is however, in the fine print near the end of the manual, a statement of warranty about the  detector being warranted to be free of defects in materials and work- manship for a period of six years from the date of purchase.

In the LazyDaze manual it does state that the CO detector should be replaced after six years. I don't know where they got this information. Maybe I should have inferred it from the warrenty statement ?

At any rate I am going to replace the CO detector. The LD came with a Costar Model 9L-i. What model do they come with now or of late? What type of detector are people using to replace the original one ? A brief web search shows the Costar RV models hard to find. Amazon lists one, but says they don't stock it. Does any one have a source for these or should I shop for a different model? TIA for help.

I replaced both the CO detector and smoke alarm (and fire extinguisher) when I bought my LD in July.  I couldn't find the same model as a replacement, so I just picked something similar from the selection at Home Depot.  I did have to change the mounting bracket too, and the screw holes were different, but the new detector covers the old holes.

I replaced mine last year with this Kidde model (part number #COPP-B):

It has worked well, warning me a couple of times when CO levels were increasing due to extended generator use. (I keep all windows and vents closed when running the generator, but exhaust must have leaked in somehow on these two occasions.) I especially like the fact that it has a digital PPM display, so that I can see the actual level of CO start to rise, and take action, long before the alarm goes off.

You mention Home Depot. I originally did the same thing! But...
I've heard that when replacing smoke detectors in an RV, that they should only be replaced with a unit specifically designed and rated for use in an RV environment due to humidity, temperature changes, vibration, etc.

Andy, can you add a comment on this?

--- Hi, Tom!  I bought a replacement CoStar CO detector directly from the manufacturer, Quantum, a year or so ago; here's the link:

I know that there are cheaper, "SOB" CO detectors, but this CoStar is a direct replacement; I didn't want to mess with drilling holes or putting in a new base plate for a different sized unit.

Tom, I did not know that either.  The expiration date on the unit was turned toward the wall where it was impossible to see.  I bought direct from factory for the same reason Joan did and found prices very competitive.  See JT's post above.

That's been my experience. Off-the-shelf smoke detectors that I tried gave false alarms and generally didn't seem happy. I bought an "RV-certified" one, and the problems stopped.
However, the CO detector I mentioned yesterday is off the shelf--not specially certified--and it has worked fine for a couple of years and many thousands of miles.
