Escape hatch lid...
Yahoo Message Number: 117821
I have searched the archives and found some info... Would anyone know what brand and type of lid cover I would need for a 1986 FL escape hatch? I don't see any documentation on the old lid... She has sprung a leak and I'm in need of one ASAP. Thanks in advance... Maybe someone might know where the best reputable place to purchase one of these? I always keep the RV covered in the winter with ADCO cover, but she's not keeping the rain out this year:( It's been one of those days.

Thanks Ellen

I replaced mine with an Elixir 26x26 Escape hatch which I got from RV Truck parts.com. I paid $130.22 plus shipping. The surprise is that it is the original in every way Ed Sainz 89RB

Yes, the factory is an excellent source for those items originally installed on your unit.

And you'll very often find their pricing is considerably lower.
During these economic time when a mfr will take considerable profit on their parts, Lazy Daze seems to be much more reasonable!
Example is Igloo Coolers, I needed a plastic latch, $1.95 for the part, $12.00 shipping & handling! They could have easily placed the part in an envelope andmailed it for a few bucks!

I spoke with Tod at the factory and he stated that the lid he would send me for $60.00 dollars plus shipping... I would have to remove the hinge from my old one and put it on the new one with Rivets. Is that how the lids are replaced? I had hoped that there wouldn't be rivets involved.
I told him I would call him back... Just checking with you all to see if this is the way to go.

Thanks in advance...

Respectfully,

Ellen

That's what I had to do when I replaced the escape hatch lid on our 2002 MB.  I seem to recall that the position of the hinge changed on newer hatches.  To use the newer lids, one has to use the old hinge part.  Pop rivets make this pretty easy, but I think I had to drill a couple of holes.  Others might chime in with their experience.

That's the way I did it.  Remove the old lid and drill out the rivets to remove the hinge.  Drill out the rivets on the new hinge and use pop rivets to attach the old hinge to the new lid.  Easy job.

I decided to take the RV to a local RV repair center and asked him if he had the hatch lid for my 86 LD. I thought it was the old Elixir model myself, he insisted other wise. He said it was the newer one. He replace it... A whoppen $105.39 for the lid and $56.00 for the labor. When I opened and closed the hatch after I got home, It wouldn't close down all the way on one side and there was a large gap. There also seemed to be a lot of stress in trying to close it. The kid also left some of the screws laying upon the roof... Irritated to say the least, I had to take the darn thing back.
There was a foam gasket glued inside the lid and he said that the gasket in the vent itself in conjunction with the gasket glued in the lid was causing the problem... He said that he never seen a gasket in the vent opening like that. So he janked out the gasket around the edges of my vent. Also some screws had not been installed that needed to be put back. After I got home there was a slight improvement but still not the way it's suppose to be.
Disappointed in Northern CA!
He also said that my propane regulator wasn't venting towards the bottom but to the side. He stated it was a safety issue. I told him that he had filled the propane tank numerous times and never said anything about it before...
He replaced it as well.
