We just drove our new used 2006 30' home and went up a 7% grade. Also the unit was pretty much empty of everything. Or is going 45-50 mph up a grade normal for an E450 with 2300 miles on it? Also does the banks system add more mpg? Thanks for looking.

Also does the banks system add more mpg? Thanks for looking." Sounds about right for a 7% grade. If you were towing a car, you'd be in a lower gear and going slower. I can usually go up a 5-6% grade at 50-55 mph with cruise still engaged (not towing). Above 6%, it slows down. Others will have opinions, but I don't think the investment in a Banks add-on is worth the gain in speed going up mountain grades - or worth the other benefits that may come from Banks. It may take a little longer without Banks, but it's a lot cheaper. You can work out the math for yourself.Chris Horst 2002 30' IB Arvada, CO

And, after 50k miles I have yet to see a 6-7% grade that was perfectly straight. So what I'm reading is that you wish to travel up such a grade at speeds of 45-50 mph. In my estimation that is downright dangerous (or foolish) and should be given many second thoughts. A 14,000 lb GVWR vehicle is not designed for that kind of performance. Thanks for looking.There's much in the archives on this, but basically the Banks system gains a small amount of extra fuel mileage - - probably take near forever to pay for itself. However, it allows you to go up any "normal" hill just as fast as you would like! Um, while burning a proportionately greater amount of fuel, of course. The speed limit on the BR Parkway is 45, like it is through Yellowstone and on a whole lot of roads in a whole lot of other places! Not that this apparently makes any difference to a lot of these "gotta get there!" types; I can't count the numbers of times that I have been driving the motorhome *at the speed limit*, but have been tailgated, honked at, flipped off, and passed on a curve (*and* on the right more than once by some dipstick on a motorcycle!) by fools who were in a big yank to get down the road! Too bad the factory doesn't offer a few James Bond-type "get this jerk off my tail" options; I have had plenty of occasions to put the "oil spew" and "rear turret gun" into play! ;-)Joan

However, I like it. Definitely have more power climbing hills/mountains while towing our '05 Sube Outback. We have experienced a gain of just over 1 mpg while traveling from CA, to NV, UT, CO, WY, MT, ID, British Columbia, WA and back to FL via Yellowstone, the Tetons, and other scenic by-ways.We are not NASCAR rated. Generally take our time. Try to stay off the interstates when we can and when we are on the interstates we run between 60 and 65 while aiming for about 62 as the rig seems to like that speed. Generally run 50 to 55 on the secondary byways is the speed limit permits. Bob - Now Back in Florida after seven months on the road loving every minute of it! {:>)__

I drive below the speed limit and have only had about three such events happen in the last five years. And two of those were in the South. We find western drivers to be more tolerant of slow drivers. It seems that my mileage does vary.
