Can any of the Apple apps be used on an Apple or PC laptop? Are they limited to use on iPhones or other Apple hand-held devices?

No. The apps we're talking about run under what Apple calls iOS, the operating system of iPhone/iPod/iPad devices. While iOS has much in common with Mac OS X "under the hood" (both are based on BSD Unix), programs written for iOS devices cannot run on Macs or vice versa, any more than Zune or Windows Phone apps can run on a Windows PC.
On the other hand, all Macs can run Windows, so with a Mac laptop you have a choice of those two major operating systems. (You can even run them simultaneously, using inexpensive third-party software such as Parallels or VMware Fusion.)
But the 250,000+ iOS apps can only run on iPhones, iPods Touch, or iPads.

Larry, this app now available for the Android according to their site.  Andy summed up all else.

I have this app, and it's well worth the $4.
It's worth pointing out, however, that this app is MUCH more useful if you have an internet connection to go with it.  If you have an iTouch (like me) or an iPad without 3g, or even an iphone or iPad3G without 3G service, than this particular app is less easy to use while on the road and away from WiFi.
The latest version of this app includes some new search methods (by highway) that do improve usefulness without an internet connection.
At $4, it's a bargain.  It pays for itself if you save even 20 miles of driving due to the information contained.

Good point, Rich. That's where MiFi comes in handy, because it lets my iPod Touch connect to the internet anywhere I can get a cell phone signal (and does the same for my main computer and my laptop). Beats the heck out of using an aircard or USB cell modem that can only handle one device at a time, and can't plug into an iPod Touch or iPad. :-)

It is now also available for the Android platform and I just downloaded it to my Motorola Droid X today.
We just got back from a 1 month trip to East Coast with our LD and I was constantly switching back and forth between my Garmin (which has all of the available POI databases for much of the RV related stuff) and my Android which has excellent area gas price information and some other resturant information.
This application on the Android utilizes Google maps and immediately indicates Campgrounds, Wall Marts, Rest Areas,  and just about anything an RV'er could want. selecting an item the map provides detailed information and allows you to easily navigate to same via Google Navigation.
You can also use preset filters to minimize or maximize the categories you are looking at. Will pretty much make my POI stuff on the Garmin obselete.
As a side note: Passport America now also has a similar Android application for their system available for free on the Android Marketplace.
