plumbing help

Hi, I'm replacing my shower/sink faucet with a single handle Moen. What I see below the sink is two narrow white tubing lines with black plastic rings apparently securing the plastic tubing to elbows below and larger fittings above. I will need to shorten the vertical runs on this tubing. Does the black plastic ring slide along the tubing? Is it put on with a special tool? Can I just shorten these runs, or will I have to fabricate new ones?
I recommend the single handle faucet(the push-pull for flow and clockwise/counter-clockwise for temperature type); makes water temp and flow much easier to control. Just leave it at about the 10 o'clock position, say, and push to shut off. When resuming flow, just pull straight out, keeping the same temperature setting. Since there is no diverter, an adapter with quick-connect threaded into the aerator threads will accomodate the shower hose. Not too elegant, but very functional.

Regards, TS
