Re: Mount Ranier CG Reply #2 – July 20, 2010, 01:06:09 am Yahoo Message Number: 114642We have never stayed at Cougar, but have stayed at Ohannapecosh almost every year since the '60s. It is a beautiful campground, but not scenic in that you cannot see the mountain. However it is centrally located between Sunrise and Paradise, so you can drive either direction for scenery and/or hiking. We have also stayed at White River, where you can see the mountain, but it is sometimes difficult to find a campsite that is level enough for a MH. Ohannapecosh takes reservations, White River does not.--Al in Scappoose (previously Bremerton) --2002 26.5 MB

We had a great view of the mountain and were able to watch several people coming back down the mountain from a climb. We'd certain stay there again.Linda Hylton http://earl-linda.blogspot.com/

Which is the more scenic or otherwise preferable? --- I've stayed at both Ohanapecosh and Cougar Rock; each is a good base for exploring "opposite" sides of the park. Clicking on the campground names in the chart found on this page will bring up a PDF of the camgpround layouts: http://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/camping.htmI remember that many sites in loop B in Ohanapecosh can be tight access for RVs, and the sites aren't necessarily too level. The sites in the loops across the bridge are more spacious. Cougar Rock is a little "drier" and more open than Ohanapecosh, but it's a very pleasant campground.Joan
Re: Mount Ranier CG Reply #5 – July 22, 2010, 03:04:07 pm Yahoo Message Number: 114674First, Thanks for the information about the Rainier CG's.Second, Rainier should be seen by those who like mountains and waterfalls. You should not be there on a weekend. It's busy enough on weekdays.Last, here is our CG report. Camping info: There are three campgrounds: Cougar Rock, Ohanapecosh and White River. The first two are reservation CGs. You would have little chance of getting a site in any CG without reservations on weekends. Ohanapecosh has full forest canopy. Avoid it if you want to use solar panels. The other two have some open sites that allow sun to reach the ground. Ohanapecosh is the lowest of the three at 1,700 feet. The others are a thousand plus higher. [O hana pe kosh]Cougar Rock is on the west side of the park. Its location is ideal for visiting Paradise. White Rock is the closest to Sunrise. Ohanapecosh is kinda in the middle 30 miles to Sunrise, a little more to Paradise.Cheers, Don

Avoid it if you want to use solar panels. This is true if you use a lot of electricity and depend on your solar panels to recharge your house batteries every day. However, we have stayed up to a week in this campground without depleting the batteries. The secret, of course, is to manage your electricity use. We don't use much - lights, water pump, maybe watch a movie - so our batteries are just fine. This is our favorite campground and we were camping here long before solar panels, both in tents and RVs. We will be spending the first week of August there and looking forward to it. As usual, YMMV.--Al in Scappoose (formerly Bremerton) --2002 26.5 MB
Re: Mount Ranier CG Reply #7 – July 24, 2010, 11:22:59 pm Yahoo Message Number: 114703I'm coming a little late to this thread, but want to note that there are more than two campgrounds accessible to RV's at Mt. Rainier: Ohanapecosh, Cougar Rock, White River (often listed under "Sunrise"), and, after a difficult drive, Mowich Lake. White River is on the East side, as is Ohanapecosh, but has more sun exposure: also, one can drive up to Sunrise and, with a short hike, see the Winthrop (I recall after over 30 years

That would be the Emmons Glacier, which feeds the White River. And by "short hike", we're talking maybe five or ten minutes.--Al in Scappoose (formerly Bremerton) --2002 26.5 MB
Re: Mount Ranier CG Reply #9 – July 27, 2010, 04:05:02 am Yahoo Message Number: 114779Good point, Al. An advantage of the White River Campground and the drive to Sunrise is that there are several hikes one can take out of Sunrise (or even out of White River up to Sunrise). There is Burroughs Mounta
