Running heater without propane?
Yahoo Message Number: 112515
I need air circulation through the heater ducts without heat.
Basically I have the coach stripped down, scrubbed and now I am going to use an ozone generator to treat it for a few hours but need that circulation via the ducts.

Is it OK to run it with the propane tuned off?
On a sidenote...when plugged in at home to A/C, would it be good to flip the converter/charger breaker switch to the OFF position to prevent battery overcharging?

Thanks,

Ted

I haven't tried it. If the heater is older and has a manually lit pilot light, I agree with Andy, should be no problem. If the heater is more modern and has an electronic igniter, then the igniter is going to be going absolutely ballistic trying to ignite the propane that isn't there!
In any case, a small fan should move air as or more efficiently than the heater fan.

Our '83 with original furnace has an auto igniter. It tries a few times, then gives up if the propane isn't there, while the fan keeps running waiting for the temp to reach 300F or so - which of course it never will without heat.
I agree with bumper that a small fan will be more versatile and effective, and no wear-and-tear on your furnace.

Another thought - I believe LD installs a small manual shutoff valve accessible with the intake grill removed (or similar location) in all their models. If for some reason you need propane for other appliances, this would isolate just the furnace.

The thing I would be concerned with is that an ozone generator can harm rubber.  I used to use on in my classroom which are dusty, dirty places.  All of a sudden, the rubber bands I used to bind paperbacks to audio cassette packs all started to snap apart at the same time.  The consistency of the rubber became brittle.  Now, I'm no expert, and don't pretend to be but I stopped using it as I wasn't sure what it would do to the computers in my classroom.
Good luck with your project.

This will be a 3 to 6 hour treatment max.
I have spoke with the manufacturer of the O3 generator and others online and the consensus is that that short of time frame would not cause damage.
I recently purchased an LD that I didn't realize was smoked in until later, and I am doing my best to eliminate or minimize the smell by removing the carpet, replacing all foam pads and washing the heck out of it plus this machine....and that is just part of it.
