GPS Recommendations April 27, 2010, 08:09:59 pm Yahoo Message Number: 112195A couple of weeks ago I posted a message asking for GPS recommendations. My rather newer Garmin 855 wasn't working anymore. I planned to replace it. Thank you for all your recommendations. I ended up calling Garmin and I was told that my GPS likely needed to be updated on the computer. The Garmin representative walked me through the update. He told me that this needs to be done every two months or so. I had no idea that one needed to do this. After the update, I just used the Garmin on a trip and it worked perfectly.Monica NE 10

I haven't heard that they need to be "updated on a computer" every two months. Of course, perhaps I don't know what the Garmin rep means by updating. In any case, you'll be happy with your choice. However, it can make it run better, add features, and fix known bugs if you elect to update it on-line - - and it's free. You can download Garmin's software "WebUpdater" to your computer. Then plug your GPS into your computer with the USB cable and run the program. It will automatically check if there is a more recent version of the GPS's software and let you choose to download it to your GPS if you wish. Note this is not the same as updating the GPS database - - that's normally not for free.bumper

GPS is getting to the point that it doesn't make sense to buy the map upgrade. I think the last Garmin GPS I bought at Costco was $100. Why pay $75 for a map upgrade? That will meet all the requirements you listed. The latest version of MS Streets & Trips retails for $40. You'll also need a GPS receiver, which can be found for $20-$50.
