Garmin 855 Question-Help! April 09, 2010, 06:43:09 pm Yahoo Message Number: 111692I just purchased new 855. Voice recognition sold us on the unit. Tell me if the unit has a problem: When I engage voice recognition the function works as advertised. However, if I pause before responding, the gps beeps, green icon disappears, and the voice recognition disengages. I did not touch the small button on the remote or did not touch the screen. I was under the impression the voice recognition would stay active until I turned it off. I contacted garmin by email and was told to upgrade software and master reset-I have done both. I have also gone to the tools and deactivated remote and activated, and changed battery in the remote. The email this morning left me with the impression that the voice activation had a problem. This afternoon, after a 45 minute wait time, I got to talk to a human from garmin and was told that the function will turn itself off if you don't respond quickly. I didn't feel real confident about the info I was getting from the young lady this afternoon. If the unit does turn itself off this quickly, I don't understand the purpose of the small button or the touch screen disconnect. Is my 855 working correctly or not? If not, I'm off to Walmart tomorrow to make the swap. Thanks,Bill

When I push the button on my 855 remote, the green "talk to me" icon stays on for several seconds before beeping and switching to the brown "you're done talking" one. Don't know how long it is exactly, but it's gotta be at least 4 or more seconds. Once you start talking it stays green until you stop (or until she gets tired of listening to you).bumper

You're right: I've almost never used the small button. And with regard to your timeout problem: the simple solution is to not press the big "Talk" button until you know what you're going to say. Just pretend you're Aladdin, and don't rub the lamp until you know what wish you're going to ask the genie for. :-)Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels/
