Dump valve replacement
Yahoo Message Number: 111538
We have an 06 30' Island Bed. The last time I dumped the blackwater tank it was a bit difficult to pull open and in fact one wing of the T handle broke.
It seemed to close the same after that and haven't dumped the tank again yet. I have a replacement handle to put on the next time I dump the tanks.
To replace the handle do you clamp pliers on the metal shaft so you can unscrew the old and screw on the new handle?
Does the fact that it seemed more difficult to pull open mean I need to replace the valve or is there a good way to fix whatever is the problem?
I have read over a how to on replacing but just wondered if there is anything I should be aware of that may present an unusual problem with our rig? I know, dump and flush first.

Open the valve all the way. Use a small brush with realtively stiff bristles (an old toothbrush can work) and a little Simple Green; I pour a bit right onto the brush.  Scrub out the rubber valve "slot" and outlet.  Close the blade part way (open and close the blade to get to as much as possible) and scrub the leading edge, top and bottom, as far as you can and the brush can reach; a shop rag works well for the areas that the brush can't get to.  After the blade and the slot are cleaned, rinsed, and dried off with a shop rag, lube the slot, the blade and the handle with a little silicone spray; use the little "straw shooter" to squirt the silicone (make sure that the slot is fully lubed), but be careful not to use too much. Mop up any overspray. It doesn't take much silicone to lube the parts, and silicone isn't goopy and doesn't collect gunk or dirt like the LD manual recommended Vaseline.
Depending on the condition of the slot and the valve closure blade (you'll be able to tell when you clean it), you might just want to replace the whole valve assembly instead of just the handle. (And, you might want to consider carrying an extra valve assembly, just in case.)

Thanks Joan.
The problem is that with the 30' model you can't access the blade without taking the assembly apart. The LD manual indicates the 30' is the only model that you can't lube.

--- :-(  Sorry about that; it's interesting that the 30' dump valve set-up can't be lubed without taking it apart.
