A while ago I wrote about that my gennie was surging. Got lots of good advice and decided a new carb was the solution. I went to the Cummins/Onan dealer in Las Vesgas today. Great people and interesting info. When the clerk finished my sale I asked how often they hear this story of surging gennies. He looked in the computer and said they sold 26 carbs in Feb and 18 so far this month. These were all for Onan 4000 Mircoquiet model KY. I wonder if Onan thinks they have a design problem or is this just another revenue stream? By the way, $156 out the door.

Let us know if it fixes the problem.

--- 44 carburetors for one generator model in a two-month period at one shop? I hope that the fix works for you, but, IMO, these numbers just don't "add up". Do keep us posted; thanks.

Seemed like a lot to me too, but I watched as he queried his inventory and saw 26 in Feb and 16 so far in March. Adds up to 44 in my world. It'll work, the service guy was standing there and said he does this frequently. I heave a good friend who just went through this, and replacing the carb fixed his issue. My friend came over and listened to my gennie and said "yup, just like mine a new carb will fix it". I'll install the new carb as soon as I recover from oral surgery tomorrow.

Sounds to me like some ought to figure out what goes wrong with the carbs and start fixing them. There really isn't much that can go bad in a carb.......
And surging almost has to be just something wrong with the jets and I suspect a good 2.00 cleaning would fix most of them...

If not then something equally as simple.

Wow that a lot of "BAD" carbs....

Last year our genset starting surging. I found the oil level high and drained some out. The surging stopped. I still can not figure out how gravity was suspended and several extra ounces got into the engine. Nor do I have a clue how excess oil would cause surging. But it did and draining it stopped the surging.

The shop manual probably says "when replacing carburetor, be sure to restore oil level to spec"

When I purchased my 2000LD in 2009. the genset had only 12 hrs. on it.  I knew there was going to trouble.  I was right.  It would surge un and down until it would stall.  The problem is varnish left when the unit is shut off and left for long periods.  My solution was to use Onans product to clean out the varnish.  I also changed the oil and filter and spark plugs.  Then I poured a large amount ot Sta-Bil in the gas tank.  After starting it, I ran it for two hours under full load. It smoothed out and hasn't missed since.  I make a habit of adding Sta-Bil and run the unit once a week for 15 minutes under a load.  Haven't had a surge since.  I priced the carb at CW at 285.
No parts were available, so they say.I hope this helps someone, Darryll in LD 24,2000

Darryl, If your gasoline has ethanol, standard Sta-Bil is ineffective.
However they do make a Marine Sta-Bil for gasoline with ethanol and the liquid is blue instead of red.

I ran a lot of carb cleaner through the carb, sprayed carb cleaner in the carb and removed the carb and soaked it overnight in a strong solution of carb cleaner. If the jets were removable/replacable I'd be happy.

Yes, my Onan 4000 Mircoquiet model KY. Surges, too!  Sounds to me like Onan should do a recall!!  What are they charging for new carbs?

The statement above is not totally correct.  Here is a statement from the Sta-Bil website.
"A: Yes, STA-BIL is safe to use in all types of gasoline, including those blends containing up to 10% ethanol."
The marine version will also work and is designed for ethanol containing fuels in a high moisture environment.  Here is their summary.
"MARINE Formula STA-BIL Ethanol Treatment is a new, enhanced formula of STA-BIL, America's top selling fuel stabilizer, that was designed to fight many of the unique problems related to ethanol in gasoline in the moisture-laden marine environment, and fights those problems in three ways:"

Hi Joan,
I'm with you in that those numbers seem kind of strange. When I read those figures, I thought that they must have one heck of a carb salesman on the parts counter. Hope he got first prize in the contest.
