Cutting Down the Bathroom Door Width
Yahoo Message Number: 111084
My 2001 T/K has the very large bathroom door (I believe LD went back to a smaller door a couple of years later).
I think I remember reading a post (long ago) about someone cutting down one of these large bathroom doors (seems like it was Andy helping somebody else on their LD).
Numerous searches of the (non-Yahoo) message database hasn't turned up any such message (or any other information) however.
I want to do that cutting-down project on my large door.  Can anybody point me to info on doing it.

Thanks,

George, your memory is correct: I helped Bill Haas cut down and rehang his bathroom door of his 1996 23.5' Twin/King. Bill and I removed the bathroom door from his rig, and took off (well, broke off, since it was glued in place) the mirror. Warming the door's vinyl edge trim with a hair dryer helped make it less difficult to remove, and after cutting 11 inches off the door's width, we re-glued the trim in place. Then we put on a new mirror, and rehung the door upside down--that is, with the hinges on the right instead of on the left--thus duplicating the newer LD design.
Then we built an 18" wide x 72" high pantry closet in the space freed up by the narrower door, gaining twelve shelf feet of storage space... as described in recent posts, and in the photo album I uploaded here a couple of days ago.

And those mods have held up very well.  I purchased this LD in Oct '06 and fulltimed in it until last summer when I bought a house.  The bathroom door mod works very well with no problems.  The shelves had sagged a bit so my brother and I took them down, put a hardboard backing on to square them up, and remounted them.  The pantry is a very nice addition to have.  (As long as you remember to lock it shut before driving off - something I forgot several times!)
This 1996 23.5' TK will be posted for sale pretty soon.  As soon as the ground dries out enough such that it won't get stuck driving it out!  (It's in Michigan).

Folks, using all caps is the online equivalent of SHOUTING. Just as trying to converse with someone who shouts in your face would be fatiguing, it's tiring to read messages in all caps. I know you didn't mean to shout, so how about turning off the caps lock key and keeping the tone conversational? We'll all appreciate it. :-)

Thanks for the response Andy.  Sorry about so long getting back to you.  Glad my memory isn't completely gone.

A couple of follow-up questions:

1.  I'm assuming it's a hollow core door, so did you guys have to remove the internal vertical framing from the cutoff piece and reinstall it into the cut-down door?
2.  What type of glue (if any) did you use to reinstall the door's vinyl edge trim?
3.  Did the new mirror completely cover the "residue" left on the door, after removing the old mirror?

Thanks again for the help Andy.  Hope all is going well with you.  How's the cat doing?

I can't remember whether we did that or just shoved another piece of lumber in there, but yes, we had to replace that edge framing piece once we'd cut down the door.

Epoxy, as I recall.

Judging by the photo I have here, it did--Mary Lou can confirm that.
