iPod Touch, 2nd to 3rd generation

"Is there any downside to 2nd generation compared to current generation?"
I'm not 100% sure here, but I believe another difference between the 2nd & 3rd generation is that the 3rd generation has a built in microphone, which I think is pretty helpful.  It also has voice control (hold the home button for 2 seconds, voice over comes on and you can speak any command, song, call, etc.)
You can use an external mic on a 2nd generation, but I don't believe it has voice control.
Or maybe not (I didn't google it, this is just off the top of my head).

None of the iPods Touch has a built-in microphone, unfortunately, though all can have one plugged in.
The 32GB and 64 GB third-generation models ship with a separate plug-in headset/mike cord, and have the ability to accept voice commands... if you're wearing the headset/mike, and if you're in a quiet environment with no background noise. According to Apple, you can only control music playing functions this way.
The headset/mike is an accessory that can also be added to the 8GB model, or to older second-generation iPods Touch. I mentioned this on my "Favorite things" web page:

However, as far as I know, the older iPods Touch and the newer 8GB model can't have their music players controlled by voice even if you do add a microphone. But you can do a lot of other things, from recording voice memos to playing a virtual ocarina to measuring sound pressure levels (how noisy is your generator is dBA?).
Thanks, Kate, for pointing out that difference in the newer 32GB and 64GB models. :-)

This is a bit tricky because the "third generation" Touch, the ones on sale now, involve both second and third generation components.
What isn't made entirely clear on the Apple Web site is that the 8GB Touch still uses the older second generation processing technology, so is slower.
The current 32GB and 64GB models use faster processing technology. One test I saw showed Web pages loading
