OK, we finally finished the shelves on the sides of the flip up table.  As always, more work than we expected.  Even though we think we know what we're doing, it's always something.
Kate, your shelves look like a really neat project.  A few questions:  where do you eat all that great food you cook?  What's your strategy for keeping stuff from coming off the shelves when you're under way?  And what material did you use to build the shelves?

Re mealtime, believe it or not, I just pick that computer up and put it on the bed in the back.  Actually, I've just ordered a handle/stand that attaches to the computer permanently, so that will do away with the computer stand and make the whole process easier.  Also, since we now have the built in shelf, I have a space for another back up hard drive, meaning I will finally be able to use Time Machine!  I've been pretty good about backing up, but this will take the whole process out of my hands (except for the incremental back ups, which will also be easier, because all THOSE hard drives are now in a container on this shelf instead of in the floor level cabinet below my closet!)  But I digress, sorry.
As to keeping stuff in place when we travel, that's still a work in progress, but when we finally decide on a method, we'll update the information.
As to the material, it's just 1x8 pine, oiled to seal with no stain.  We tried staining the first one (golden pecan) but weren't happy with the results, so it has been donated to the local thrift store as a small book case for their use.  We decided on just oil, and over time, it will age a bit.  While it doesn't match the cabinets perfectly, truthfully, most of the wood isn't visible and I like the lighter wood anyway.
