Paint-on "Sun Block" for tires?
Yahoo Message Number: 109649
The "RV View" magazine published by camping world arrived last week.
On pages 72 and 73 they describe a paint-on sun block product for tires.
Have any of you tried this product?  Are you confident that it works?

Has this been discussed before?

Thank you for your help.

I haven't tried it, but I would be leery of putting any of these "tire dressings" on my tires.
Before purchasing, look carefully at the ingredients, even going so far as to look up the MSDS for it to make sure it doesn't have any petroleum byproducts (which aren't good for tires).

We've used nothing by 303 Aerospace Protectant on our tires.

Ken, it would be helpful if you told us the name of the product. Not everyone here gets the Camping World magazine. Aside from that, I agree with Linda: check the product's Material Safety Data Sheet (available online at http://www.ilpi.com/msds/>) for petroleum derivatives, and avoid it if they are present.

--- Agreed. The product website offers no information on the "state of the art ingredients" (their words) in this "Sun Block", and I wasn't able to find an MSDS for it.
I also use nothing but 303 Protectant (no petroleum distillates) on the (cleaned) tire sidewalls and whatever other rubber and/or vinyl surfaces happen to be within "swiping" reach. And, when the motorhome sits for more than a couple days at a time, its tires are covered.
One additional problem (besides the unknown formulation) that I can see with using this product or any other that promises that one application will last *4-5 years* is that the rig owner might feel a false sense of security and not bother to check the tires, especially the sidewalls, trusting that the paint-on product will offer all the protection necessary.
I would stick with 303, covering the tires, maintaining the appropriate pressures for the weight of the rig, and doing regular, thorough inspections -- don't forget the inside duals.  But, as ever, YMMV.

While on the subject of tires, watch this story about purchasing "New" but old tires. Paying attention to the manufacturing date stamped on new tire purchases.
Also, Goodyear has introduced RV tires with UV ray & ozone protection that don't have to be covered.
The bad news is that they are not offered in the 16-inch size yet.
