2003 E450 brake pads
Yahoo Message Number: 109461
Our 2003 LD is ready for it's first brake job.
I like the performance of the OEM pads, especially how well they bite when cold.
Motorcraft makes a standard and Super Duty Version of the pads. Both types of pads are molded, semi-metallic.
I'm not sure which pad, if either, Ford used.
So, who out there has replaced their brakes using Motorcraft standard or Super Duty pads and what is your impression?  Do you notice any difference when compared to the stock brakes? Do they work well when cold?

--- Larry, I haven't replaced the brakes on my 2003 yet, but I did find this description of the Motorcraft "Super Duty" brake pad on a auto parts supplier, i.e., Rowerdink.com, website:

"Super Duty Brake Pads
Engineered specifically for vehicles that are frequently exposed to high-heat and wear conditions, the new Super Duty brake pads from Motorcraft® deliver the performance and quality Ford Motor Company has made standard in all their products. They feature:
o       Original Equipment (O.E.)-quality abutment points that help reduce pad clatter/rattle and help ensure uniform pad wear.
o       Advanced shim design to help reduce noise and improve adhesion between the pad and backing plate.
o       Slots engineered to help improve heat and water dissipation by providing a path for gases, wear debris and water to escape from between the pad and rotor surface.
o       Ford Motor Company-tested friction formulas developed specifically for Super Duty brake pads to help ensure increased fade resistance, pad life, and reduced rotor wear under the most severe, high-heat driving conditions.
o       Chamfers engineered to reduce the possibility of excessive noise during severe braking and initial break-in period."
I hope you receive additional responses, and please let us know what you ultimately decide on and why.  Thanks!

Joan

I found the same description at Rockauto.com.
Here is what I'm trying to find out. Most of the high-performance disc brake pads I have tried through the years do not grab or bite well when cold. They need to be warmed up before they start working 100%. The E450 OEM pads grab well any time and that is what I want to continue to experience, I just not sure what OEM pads our LD has on it.
I may need to disassemble one wheel and see if the pads have any usable parts numbers stamped on them.
I will let you know if I find the answer.
