Cost of HughesNet Internet
Yahoo Message Number: 109125
I searched the archives. A few members (Andy and Linda) have stated the start up price for a HughesNet satellite system would be between $1400 to $2000. I also searched the Hughes web site and prices (after rebates) seem much lower. I'm assuming we can just take the same equipment from home and use it on the road.
Can you please explain the higher prices?  Are you referring to a roof mounted dish antenna or a tripod mounted dish?

Thanks Ed 2001 RK

To answer your last question first: No, we are not referring to the roof-mounted automatic dish (Datastorm)...it's around $5,000 installed!
The higher price for the tripod-mounted system over what you can get direct from the HughesNet website, is for a complete system (all the equipment necessary, including the industrial tripod) PLUS -- and this is the key -- support!!!
HughesNet DOES NOT support moving their dish around on a tripod, so you cannot call them if you have having problems with finding the signal, or any other problem you encounter on the road.  If they find out that you're moving the dish, you account will most likely be cancelled.
Sure, you can cobble together a tripod-mounted HughesNet system for a lot less than you can buy it from an installer...but then you have no support if you run into trouble.  I suppose if you are extremely knowledgeable about these things, you can do it...I have heard of people with cobbled-together systems, but *I* want someone to call when I run into problems.
