fuel pump replacement

Hi. What do you think? Should it cost more than $1,000 for a new fuel pump for a 2005MB with about 30k miles on it? We stopped in Red Rock Canyon Campground on Dec. 30 on our way to Death Valley for the New Year's holiday. The next morning our beloved LD wouldn't start. My husband and one of the friends traveling with us -- something of a car boy -- tried everything they could think of and then diagnosed the problem as likely being the fuel pump. On Saturday we had the LD towed to a Ford dealership in Bakersfield where they confirmed the diagnosis and are quoting more than $1,000 to drop the tank and put on the new pump. I imagine this price will include replacing the drive shaft, which had to be dropped for the tow. The guy at the dealership says the part costs $500. He also said he is seeing two of these fuel pump failures per day right now. He says he suspects bad fuel. Does this sound likely?

Thanks and Happy New Year. Rod & Ann

We had a horrible experience in our 05, which after weeks, also turned out to be a bad fuel pump.

Ours was still under warranty so I don't know what the cost was.  I also remember another 2005 (a midbath, ours is a 30TB) that had the same problem.  I think there were a lot of that vintage that had bad fuel pumps.
My condolences, ours was a nightmare, since it took them over 2 weeks to diagnose.  At least you know what the problem is.

Rod & Ann,
Are you getting an "engine check" light, and what is the "trouble code"?  Did they replace the fuel filter?  A clogged filter can give you fuel pressure problems at the engine.
Assuming the diagnosis is proper the dealer is being a dealer and is perhaps gouging you.
I had a fuel pump problem on my '05 MB on the trip to Alaska this past summer. It was diagnosed by a Ford dealer in Dawson Creek, BC where the replacement part was to be $670 Canadian, plus replacement labor of course. The fuel tank has to be dropped. Fortunately, they did not have one in stock nor did anyone in town have an after-market one.  I ordered a fuel pump and had it sent to my niece in Alaska for less than $270 including two-day FedEx.  It was installed at an independent garage in Anchorage for just under $400.  Surely Anchorage is not the cheapest place to have work done in the US.
The part I got was an Airtex E2437S (for 2005 Ford E-450 Econoline 6.8L 415 cid V10 FI) from www. RockAuto.com Airtex claims they try to improve on the original pumps.  No fuel problems since the replacement.
I don't see "bad fuel" messing up a fuel pump unless it had lots of sediment in it.  The "sock", which is a filter on the pump itself was fairly clean on my old pump.  Poor quality on the Ford's original fuel pump, I'll believe.  Of course, someone else makes it for them.  But, it was good enough for Ford.  My pump failure was at around 40K miles.  It was a soft failure where the pump could not deliver enough fuel at the pressure needed at the engine (minimum of 48 PSI).  The rig was not disabled just limited under heavy loading.

Thanks for your empathy, Kate. I've found out that these are, for the most part, a "dealer only" part and the going rate from them is $500. Sigh. However, it's kind of good news to hear the pump might have just been a lemon and that we won't be facing the same problem aga

Hi Alex. Yeah, we were carrying a spare fuel filter and one of the first things Rod did was to change it -- just

It's a common problem on E-series Ford's since 1994.
$1,000 is what Ford dealers charge for replacement.
You can get an Airtex pump for less.
This repair does not require a Ford dealer.
If you do use Ford, the part and labor is warranted.

A little after the fact, I checked in and searched on "fuel pump", because I had to get mine replaced at a Ford dealer in Mercer, PA, in late March - it was at about 50k miles also.  They only had to keep it a couple hours, on two successive days, to diagnose it.  It was $818; so I guess I got off easy.  It manifested itself as a "check engine" light, with NO symptoms.  The lady said the light can mean any one of 209 problems.  They had to let it run, and warm up, before they discovered the fuel pump weakened after it warmed up.  Heck, I drove it from Houston, TX, to NW PA with no problem except the dratted light.  I love this web site, I can always learn something.

Dear Rod & Ann, Since the fuel pump is inside the tank, the fuel itself is used as a coolant for the pump.
My mechanic at Ford advised me not to drive with less than a half tank of fuel.
(remember when it took two bolts and removing the fuel line to change out a fuel pump!) At any rate something to pass along as well as a particular fix we went through in Cedar City, Utah; on our way to Arizona.
Check engine light, wrench light, and our 2006 MB went into, "limp in mode." (doing 40 on a 80 mph  stretch of freeway!) Turns out it was a bad TP sensor. No, not for the black tank, it's the throttle positioning sensor. I found a great mechanic at that Ford dealer, not only did he work three hours on our rig and got us the right $190 part to fix us up, he checked the warranty on the part.
It is covered by Ford to 80,000 miles! So we didn't pay anything out of pocket. It seems anything to do with the EPA side of your engine is also covered by this hidden warranty.
Sorry to hear you had to go through the expense of a new fuel pump.
Here's hoping the new one lasts longer.
