23/24 foot generator position, noise, and charging
Yahoo Message Number: 108498
Hi, can an owner answer a question regarding the generator mount/position on the 23/24 foot LD's?  I'd like to know if the generator can drop straight down from the installed position, or if it has to be moved horizontally out first. Probably I am asking if the generator is mounted above, or outside of, the frame rail.
On a related issue, what is owner's reaction to running generator noise/vibration inside the LD while camping? I currently have a Honda 2000 mounted on the rear bumper of my class C; vibration/noise is too great, so I run it on the ground, if there is no one nearby. It is so quiet that long runtimes are not really a problem.
Last, without considering air conditioning, is 4000 watts really necessary? The main issue here is battery charging when solar is not enough. Everyone's situation is different, but have any owners found themselves wanting a smaller, quieter generator instead of the 4K Onan class? For the most part I am interested in operations without a large inverter.

From inside my '06TK, the noise and vibration is not objectionable.  However, I think it's embarassingly loud outside, so I use the Onan as little as possible if I'm around others.  I wish a Honda had been installed by LD instead of the Onan.  -- Jon

Too bad Honda does not build a suitable Generator for small RVs :-(.
The Onan's exterior sound level is loud.
Like Jon, we tend to use our generator sparingly when in quiet campgrounds.
It's the reason why it does not have many hours on it. Most of the hours have been put on in the driveway during the monthly run.

Agreed.  The noise and vibration inside the rig is minimal, but outside, the deceptively-labeled "MicroQuiet" Onan is LOUD; like Jon and Larry (and probably quite a few others!), I don't fire the thing up if I'm camped next to, or close to, others. And, in addition to the noise, the exhaust stinks; generator fumes, from my rig or someone else's, rate right up there on the outdoor "stink-o-meter" with campfires made with "punky" or green wood!  ;-) YMMV.

At one delightful place we parked this year there were the folks parked in the trees and those of us parked along the river. About 150 yards separated us. There was a big rig in the trees that apparently ran his genset all day. Until his neighbors, in mass, paid him a educational visit. I heard at the campfire that he left the next day.
And what's with the folks that build fires during the day when it's 80 plus degrees. They always seem to use green wood and sit and punch it all day.

Honda does build RV generators:"

The Honda EV4010 is not in the same class.
Compare the specs and you will see that the Honda is much larger, heavier and nosier.  It would require a coach redesign to accommodate it. It is probably a better generator for another application but not our LDs The Onan is a better unit for small Class Cs.

A few summers ago, we were camped at a lake in the Western Sierras during 100+ degrees temperatures.
Late one afternoon, a big rental Class A pulled in across from use, generator and A/C blasting. After an hour, two men got out started a large fire and then got back in the RV, watching the fire in the comfort of the air conditioning. Every so often, one of them would get out and add more wood.
About 11:00-pm, after it had cooled a bit, everyone got out and sat around the table, their backs to the fire, and watchd a portable TV. The men kept the fire well supplied with wood.
Eventually, they went to bed, leaving the fire burning.
The next morning the men came out and rekindle the fire, then got in the MH and left.
Don't you love the camping experience!

Honda has the specs crossed between the 6000 watt EV6010 and the 4000 watt EV4010. If you look at the Operator's and Owner's Manual it looks like the EV4010 could fit where the Onan was.
Honda says "Designed to fit standard RV configurations, it is easy to upgrade to Honda." Has anyone tried?

Larry, This is SOP for many camping Texans.  Still trying to figure it out myself.
A friend of ours with a SOB runs his genset 24/7.  His 42 ft. Foretravel (oops! Can I say Foretravel, Paul?) is all electric. Gotta keep that residential side by side refrig running.

I believe the Honda generator designed to replace the Onan is no longer in production. I did follow a retrofit story a year or so ago posted on the net and would be interested in doing it but not with a no longer in production unit. The specs show it to be quieter than our latest Onan, more stable voltage, etc. The only weakness of the Honda I noted was the lack of an altitude adjustment. The carb jet has to be changed. Doesn't matter. No longer available.
