1997 Honda CRV "TOAD" What steps need to be followed to tow it all 4
Yahoo Message Number: 108413
Have a (TOAD) 1997 Honda CRV Automatic that I want to tow behind a 1994 LD MB all 4 wheels down. What are the specific steps I need to follow with the vehicle before towing to insure not damaging the automatic transmission? I'll be using Blue Ox equipment to tow it!

Thanks,

Ed  94'LD 26.5'MB

You should check with a Honda dealer. The following procedure (taken from a 2009 Fit owner's manual) is applicable to most recent Honda models, but there's no guarantee it applies to your old one--so to be safe, ask Honda!

Your vehicle can be towed behind a motorhome at legal highway speeds up to 65 mph (100 km/h). Do not exceed 65 mph (100 km/h). Otherwise, severe transmission damage will occur.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Perform the following procedure every day immediately before you begin towing. Otherwise severe automatic transmission damage will occur.

1. Check the transmission fluid level. Do not overfill.

2. Start the engine.

3. Press on the brake pedal. Move the shift lever through all its positions.

4. Shift to the D position and hold for 5 seconds, then to N. Let the engine run for 3 minutes, then turn it off.
NOTICE: Severe transmission damage will occur if the vehicle is shifted from reverse to neutral and then towed with the drive wheels on the ground.

5. Release the parking brake.

Leave the ignition switch in the ACCESSORY (I) position so the steering wheel does not lock. Make sure the radio and any items plugged into the accessory power sockets are turned off so you do not run down the battery.

EXTENDED TOWING When you stop towing your vehicle and shift out of the neutral position, you may not be able to move the shift lever from neutral to reverse or Park. If this happens, press the brake pedal and turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position, then shift out of neutral.
NOTICE: Failure to follow the recommended instructions exactly will result in severe automatic transmission damage. If you cannot shift the transmission or start the engine, your vehicle must be transported on a flat-bed truck or trailer.

--- Agreed.  He might also look at www.remcotowing.com .  Click on the "Application Chart", drill through the make/model/year selections, and take it from there.
And, JMHO, but if one already knows that the tow set-up and equipment will be from Blue Ox, why not talk to them, too?

I have a 2005 CRV Honda 2 wheel drive.  I was hoping to use it as a toad, but have been getting information that there is a distinction between the 4 wheel drive model and the 2wd when it comes to towing... is this true?

Don't know for sure about the 4WD model, but the 2WD 2005 CR-V is definitely towable following the procedure I quoted. (If you have a manual transmission, it's even simpler: just put it in neutral and skip to step 5.)
