It's a good thing for seniors. I figure that we have earned it on more than one occasion.

Hip, Hip, Hurray, David!
And, don't forget, this new proposal, if passed, won't just affect seniors.
It will also affect those with permanent disabilities regardless of age...people like veterans who have sacrificed much for this country.

I guess that applies to discounts too if it means younger folks get to pay more because I'm charged less.

Well, by that logic, if this measure passes, then the price that younger people...and the non-disabled...pay should go down because they won't be *subsidizing* those of us who have one of these passes.  However, I've not heard that the fees are going to be going down for others, just that the increase -- to concessionaires, remember -- is being done on the backs of seniors and the disabled.
If this were all about the USFS needing more money (and I'm sure they do), perhaps it wouldn't rankle so much.  But it's not about the USFS...it's about the concessionaires who are trying to get more money for themselves.

Linda,
I think access costs spread fairly among all classes of users, balanced against cost recovery for the USFS, and fair profit for concessionaires, are all separate but related issues. I'm not knowledgeable enough about their costs and profit to comment much on that. If the USFS is getting less government subsidies (our tax money) handed them, then it's reasonable to conclude that access costs may not go down for any class of user even though it's being raised for another, previously subsidized, class.
Why shouldn't the parks be paying their own way? And why shouldn't the concessionaires be trying to get more money for themselves, as long as that compensation is reasonable and fair? Profit is not evil. It's one of those underpinnings that makes capitalism work. Since concessionaires are using public land, I agree there should be controls on what they can charge.
If some have been getting a "free ride", and that's coming to an end, I can understand they'd be upset. I can also understand that our govenment is not on a fiscally sustainable course and hasn't been for decades.
In reading what I've just written, I'm starting to sound more political than LD, sorry, I won't comment further on this.

That certainly appears to be the case.  The concessionaires knew the rules when they signed up!  As far as those of you who don't want (or think you deserve) to get a break on these fees, you are more than welcome to pay the full amount, or tip the friendly underpaid concessionaire, or even pay more income tax than you're required to.  Be my guest!
I only hope it will be easy to determine which FS campgrounds are run by concessionaires so that they will be easy to boycott.  I'd surely rather give my 50% to the FS.  I might even include a tip.  That's all I have to say on the subject.

With this change by the U.S. Forest Service, can the BLM be far behind? Nowhere to go if you're living on Social Security and can't afford campground fees.

Some of us may not have been able to 'live below our means', since our 'means' barely met expenses - like a roof over our head, food on the table, clothing for our children and selves, health insurance and a modest savings for a rainy day.  Some of us live where there are always rainy days.

Carol and Linda,

Good point.
I've been there too. Both as an immigrant child to this country in the slums of East St. Louis (before they were called ghettoes), and later in the early 60's, trying to support my family on what the US Navy paid back then.
Not saying there's not an absolute poverty level and that some really do need and deserve help, but I suspect it's rare indeed that a Lazy Daze owner is honestly there. You just cut expenses where you have to, make do with less, live within your means and always find a way to save some.
I've heard two definitions of wealth from friends: Wealthy is someone who has 25% more than you. (g) But the one I like was told me by a friend who probably worth several hundred million (he co-founded one of those really big Silicon Valley companies back when). "Wealth is when your basic needs are met, and your income exceeds your expenses." He has some very expensive toys, but he also runs a charitable foundation and gives a lot back.
I'll admit unappologetically, I'm financially comfortable. I made some hard, arguably stupid sacrifices to arrive at that - - like not taking a vacation, or even a weekend off, for over 5 years after I first founded my company.
Boy I was dumb!! But I guess that's what I thought I had to do to get far enough away from that East St. Louis slum in my mind.
The point I'm trying to make is most of us have choices. I've watched some of my company employees put vacations on their credit cards while not paying down there credit card debt. Then later complaining they have not enough money.
No, I still think that for most Americans there's amazing opportunity here if you're willing to work hard and you take responsibility for your own self.
BTW, my company is one of those that gives back. We donate food baskets, and the employees use company funds to purchase Christmas presents that we then take to local churches for distribution to needy families. I've been there, and I remember what that's like.

Merry Christmas,

Bureaucracy SUCKS! And the worst of it is, we have to pay their salary.
I am also a 21 year American Veteran. My sacrifice should entitle me to any compensation 'promised'. Such as "Free" medical care for life(a broken promise), and when I accepted the offer of a Golden Age passport (and paid $10 for it) I was 'promised' it was good for "Life". Looks like we are getting exactly what the Government 'promised' the Indians.

My best prediction is that if these fees are increased, there will be less usage, Thus defeating the original purpose of the plan. I guess we'll just have wait and see, assuming that these changes really occur. It's just another form of increasing taxation in trying times. History has proven that it has never worked.

Steve,
Thank you for your service! (I only spent 8 years in the Navy . . . I learned a lot though :c).
Yup. Politicians on both sides have made promises and commitments that our children are not going to be able to afford to pay for (let alone us). As a country, we are so "in the hole" financially that it'll take many generations to extricate ourselves . . . and that assumes (wrongly) that we start acting responsibly right now.
Does that mean those lies and promises should be kept at the expense of future generations? No, I don't think so*. Rather it means those lies shouldn't have been told and those promises shouldn't have been made. It was and is a house of cards and bound to collapse. Look around - - you're witnessing it right now and we are still not taking the right steps to stop or even slow it down.
*Not saying that those commitments should be abandoned outright. Honoring them should be a high priority. But we absolutely have to stop spending money we don't have, and start paying back what we owe as a nation. DC has gone totally insane with *our* pocketbooks!

I typically camp in the Stanislaw Nat. Forest in the central Sierra Nevada Mtns. of California. To my knowledge there are NO campgrounds in that entire forest that are NOT run by concessionaires and it has been so for at least three decades. Many such campgrounds are neat and orderly staffed by concessionaire employees who are conscientious and go by the posted rules. Others of which I am familiar set arbitrary rules (no checks allowed for instance), allow some people to skate on the fee and turn their back on USFS rules (such as # of people per site). I know of one instance where the 'Campground Host', who preferred to not use the 'Host designated site' actually permitted a fellow concessionaire employee (who was not the designated host) to park his huge 5th wheel on the 'Host' site (w/sewer dump) for most of the summer season. I now boycott all campsites which fall under the control of that Concessionaire.

Andy says: "My question is simple: when I'm using the same services as the twenty-year-old in the next campsite over, why should I expect to pay less just because I'm older than he is? After all, it costs the same to collect my trash as it does his, and so on for all the other costs of operating the campground. Why should I get a free ride (or a half-free ride) just because of my age?"

I thought that you were the guy who bought an annual NM State Park Discount Card so you could stay in the State Parks for a lower rate than the 'twenty-year-old in the next campsite'?  And he's the guy who will probably play his raucous music all night long!

No, on this one I don't agree with you, Andy.  You to, may change your view once you qualify for the Golden Age Passport!

Bumper, while I agree totally with your comments, we are getting way off the RV topic.  This proposal is being made to increase profits to the concessionaiers and will be of little or no help to the financial problems facing our country (and our future generations).  I honestly don't think it will help the concessionaires anyway, as most of us old folks (and disabled) use these campsites during the week when most of the sites are empty anyway.  Half of anything is better than nothing!

There's no age limit on the NM Annual Camping Pass. Anybody can buy one, including the hypothetical twenty-year-old, so it has no relevance to this discussion.
And I agree with Rich: we are getting way off the RVing topic. I take responsibility for having contributed, but I think it's time to turn back to Lazy Daze matters. Let's face it... we can sit here all day bashing "those #@%^&* bureaucrats," but it won't accomplish anything. So I'll close this thread with three suggestions:

1. Before you make up your mind, read Howard's article:    http://rv-dreams.typepad.com/rvdreams_journal/2009/12/america-the-beautiful-interagency-passes-.html>
2. Read the proposal itself:

http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/E9-28744.htm>
3. If you disagree with the proposed changes, email a comment by following the instructions at the Federal eRulemaking portal:

http://www.regulations.gov>

And now back to RVing and Lazy Dazes! :-)

Bumper - I agree that very few of those the raised fees will affect are LD owners.  But some fulltimers are full timing in whatever they can acquire because they can't afford to live in a fixed residence.  Now, I'm not saying the raised fees are onerous to Linda and me, or to most, if not all, LD owners, but raised fees to Seniors on a fixed income may mean they will no longer be able to enjoy the campgrounds and day use areas that should be available to all americans.  Seems sad to me.

As a senior I have to disagree with the comments that seniors should have to have their discounts taken away.  Many seniors through no fault of their own have had their life savings decimated.  I bet that those living comfortable in retirement still would not think about giving up their social security benefits or Medicare benefits to help out those less fortunate.  Young people have years to recover from what has happened to our economy.   I think it would be fairer to increase the fees for everyone and keep the senior discount.  I especially object to having the disabled not having the discount.  You can never make things equal to everyone, but again there are many seniors living out their final years that are not well off.  A great society is judged by how well they treat the old, disabled and the poor.

Just sharing contact info I saw in an RV email tonight:

"While the fee change is not set in stone, the public has only until February 1 to make their feelings known to the Forest Service on their proposal. Comments can be directed to the agency via the website,
www.regulations.gov, or mailed to the US Forest Service, Attention Carolyn Holbrook, Recreation and Heritage Resources Staff, 1400 Independence Ave.
SW, Stop 1125, Washington, DC 20250-1125. You can also phone Ms. Holbrook at 202-205-1426."

Might help you feel better to take action!

Hope that helps,
