Shurflo 5.7 Solution?
Yahoo Message Number: 106172
This is certainly a bit premature but thought I would let you know what has transpired with us and Shurflo on our 5.7.
I was dealing with a guy name Ron in customer service at the Elkhart, IN location.
We have gone through three of these pumps since 07 with the last two happening in the past month. I know some folks have indicated that Shurflo had resolved their issues sometime in the spring of 08. Our last pump had a mfg date of 7/09. It ran for 2 weeks and then just ceased to run.
Anyway, Ron says that they think that part of the problem or perhaps the whole problem lies in the smaller diameter plumbing, 1/2" ID, that we are using, but who knows.
He suggested a new pump they have been using. It is the 4008 RV By-Pass. It calls for 1/2" diameter plumbing. However, it is rated at 3 GPM and it is not variable speed.

Here is how it explains the by pass function.
"The pump operates normally up to 40 PSI, where a spring loaded by-pass valve opens, allowing flow back from the output side to the input side, providing smooth, steady flow with virtually no cycling, all the way down to a trickle. As a faucet is opened back up, the pressure will drop, the by-pass will close and full flow is obtained."
It also notes that "the by-pass is a spring loaded diaphragm that opens up allowing water from the discharge side back to the inlet side. The by-pass is set to begin opening at about 40 PSI and creating full by-pass at about 62 PSI. The pressure switch on the pump is set to shut off at 55 PSI."
I have added the above two paragraphs in case it might mean something to someone.
It seems to deliver good water pressure and it does so smoothly as it claims.

It remains to be seen if it will last.
I posted a couple of photos in a folder titled Shurflo 4008. The new pump is both smaller and lighter.
Ron said that they have about 500 of these pumps out now and he personally has sent out about 20. I got the impression that they have been sent to folks with the 5.7 problems.
I pass all this along since I don't see any info on the 4008 anywhere online and don't think they are out to the public as yet. If you are still having problems with yours you might want to give this a try.
Will let everyone know if there are problems with this one as time goes on.
By the way there was very little blood and cursing involved in the installation although there was some of both.
