TV Converter Box - Boondocking
Yahoo Message Number: 105588
Hi - browsing posts, found mention of Artec converters, bought one, and wondering how I should hook up when boondocking.
Have a 92-3 TK with older 9" RCA ac/dc TV which came with heavy duty 110 and 12V plugs and worked fine in either receptacle at rear of rig prior to digital change over. Now, with the Artec T3AP-LL I just bought, do fine with 110 plugs when hooked up as there are 2 outlets next to 12V TV plug, for both TV and converter 110 plugs.
However, what about when boondocking? With only a single 12V plug, should I get a dual 12V plug to accommodate the TV 12V plug (which has a 10a fuse) and a 12 V plug for the Artec (Radio Shack has one with a 2a fuse)? Have looked at at dual 12V plugs at Radio Shack and Pep Boys, but neither have the same beefy end as what came with the TV. Have read I could use an inverter, but would save battery life with 12V converter.

Don't want to fry anything and all suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

This is an ugly little problem that I don't have a good answer for.  However, you have made the correct observations and are asking the right questions.  I did a "Getting Ready for DTV" talk for Lazy Daze Northwest in May so I looked all over for a reasonable quality 12V power splitter to illustrate what to buy and could not find one.
I have seen a few at ham radio conventions for large prices but never have seen one in a "normal" store; even Camping World.  Yet, that's what you need for this situation.  You might look around on the web.  A quick search turned up this item:
 http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/223656779/12V_power_outlet/showimage.html

That says it has a 10 Amp fuse.  It's the right sort of thing. For my own use, I finally pulled out the Wineguard TV outlet plate and added a fused connection with a pigtail for my Artec DTV converter.  This is an option not open to many.  Is there another 12 V outlet you could use?  (Don't use the one's on the dash, they typically connect to the chassis battery.)

Dual 12 volt adapter?  That's what I did.  That Artec draws very little current.

The Artec consumes very little current, so a 12V 'Y' connector should do for both. The thing to check carefully is the polarity of the power connector on the Artec (center pin the positive or the negative?) and make certain the Radio Shack connector is set the same. I also recommend you leave both TV and Artec set for 12V operation, even if you have hookups.
