BluCon is great! (a long, belated pick-up report)
Yahoo Message Number: 105317
Hi Everybody,
Early last April, I weighed in with news that my husband Bernie and I had just ordered a new MB, to be named BluCon (it's blue and Bernie says I conned him into it). Many of you cheered us on, giving us great info and moral support.
We were especially fortunate before pickup in getting to meet and talk with several expert LD owners (Andy Baird, the Pratts and the Malpases). Since pickup, we also visited Kate Klein and her husband, Terry, as they camped at Ghost Ranch. We gleaned lots of wisdom and useful ideas from all of them. Thanks, folks!
There was some interest in this group about the timing of delivery for a new LD order. Our wait turned out to be less than 3 months. We flew to Ontario for our June 25 orientation tour at the Mothership and subsequent 4-hour drive by Colin Moore to Las Vegas.
As it turned out, BluCon was the first LD built on the 2009 Ford chassis (very nice cab!), and also the first "modern" paint design they produced, other than two demo models. We know it's not as instantly recognizable as the "traditional" LD design, but we do like the look very much. And, of course, once you get inside, it's a Lazy Daze through and through.
In the two months since pickup, we've taken three good trips through Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming, for a total of 5 weeks. We brought BluCon home last weekend from our latest outing and spent the better part of Tuesday washing and waxing her. She's in storage in Albuquerque right now, parked near another blue MB, awaiting our next trip (back to Arizona and Utah) in about a month.
We have camped for a total of 7 days at "serious altitudes"--10,300' in Cedar Breaks NM (UT) and 10,700' in the Snowy Range (WY)--and found the heater makes things quite comfortable on 30-40 degree nights. We cranked up our generator and AC to deal with one icky 105 degree day in Utah. BluCon cooled down a delicious 20 degrees in about an hour.
My husband is an artist and I'm a wildlife photographer, so we're taking BluCon into natural areas where there's little or no lodging. We love waking up to great bird activity and beautiful morning light on the mountains and lakes. We spend our days hiking and picnicking, and then enjoy painting and photographing again in the gorgeous evening light.
BluCon is everything we hoped it would be. We've had almost no problems and continue to be impressed with the quality of the design and construction. I'm especially delighted with one feature of the MB that I didn't anticipate: how you can pull the accordion door closed, lock the bathroom door open, and have a spacious, private dressing room. Wow!
I put together a functional combination of stacked plastic drawers of three different sizes (from WalMart and Bed, Bath and Beyond), strapping-taped them solidly together, and added home-made Velcro straps to keep the drawers from opening en route. They extend from top to bottom and occupy about 60% of the wardrobe hanging space; we use the rest for jackets and Bernie's jeans.
We live close to Albuquerque, so we're not planning to camp at the Balloon Fiesta in October; however, we may stop by to say hello and get to know another group of LD owners.
We often see an LD on the highway near Santa Fe, or even in town. If any of you are going to be in this area, please feel free to drop me a private note. Bernie and I look forward to getting to know a whole lot more of you!

PS... I have a couple of questions for this wise group, but I'll save them for another post.
