picking digital/analog converter

Been reading all the messages in the archives and doing research on the web. More to this than I thought! Since i have Dish at home, it wasn't an issue til now. Eventually, I will be taking my port. sat. once I get my waiver from Dish. But until I learn how to set it up by myself as I travel, I will need the converter...[is there anything I need to know in advance about using the sat. with a converter TV?].

My unit is an original '98 IB, with the combo TV/VCR...no DVD, Winegard antenna, splitter, 2nd. TV in bedrm.
By now, most of you full timers have already installed one if needed.
Can any of you give feedback on the brands you've purchased? the recommended Dish network TR-40 CRA has been discontinued. The replacement unit is the DishPal Plus, but it is getting trashed on some of the A/V forums.
One question--with RV use instead of stick house, is pass-thro analog something I need? Smart antenna? I'm starting to go blind with reading and research!
I guess what I'm asking is..what IS important for full timers versus houses? I need to get one ordered/bought and install it before my departure date of Sept. 7th...tick tock tick tock

Gini, email me and I will send you photos of how I set up my '02 30' IB.  I have a sat antenna but you should be able to get something from my photos.

Gini, you do NOT need any kind of waiver just to take a receiver from your house and put it in your RV...just go ahead and do it.  If you are receiving your "locals" from Dish Network, you will, of course,  lose those locals once you leave their spot beam area, but all your other programming will be the same.
If by "waiver," you mean the RV Waiver so that you can pick up the networks from the east coast and the west coast, you can't get that directly from Dish Network...they lost their ability to supply DNS (Distant Network Service) to their customers several years ago when they lost a court battle because they weren't following the DNS rules.
You CAN, however, get DNS through a 3rd-party company, All American Direct.
You will, of course have to fill out an RV Waiver and send it in with a copy of your RV's registration form.  The two coasts you'll get will be from New York and San Francisco.
Technically (and legally), you are not supposed to be able to get "locals" and "DNS" at the same time on the same account.  I don't know how diligent All American Direct is in checking with Dish Network to make sure that, when they receive an RV Waiver from someone, that they are not also signed up for locals with Dish Network.

So All American Direct does NY & SF and DirecTV does NY & LA? (We had DirecTV until we stopped full-timing.)

Yes, that's correct.  All American Direct was providing DNS from Atlanta and San Francisco.  Don't know why they switched from Atlanta to New York...maybe Atlanta stopped being on a CONUS signal?
