Another tire question
Yahoo Message Number: 105114
Consumer Reports lists its top recommendations for Light Truck tires. I understand motor homes like mine (22') fit in that category. But some tire dealers say the CR reports weren't based on the weight that a motor home adds to a light truck.
They recommend other tires and I can't seem to find anything on the internet that gives me a rating for tires that need to carry the weight of a motor home.

Anyone have any help or suggestions please?

Thank you. ~ Chuck

They're right. A five to seven ton motorhome isn't a light truck.

Three suggestions:

1. Read the article "ABOUT YOUR TIRES" in our Maintenance & Repairs folder (in this website's Files area).

2. Search the archives (http://www.lazydazers.org/Yahoo/msg_display.php>) for discussion on specific brands and sources... there's been plenty over the years.

3. You can't go wrong with Michelin XPS RIB tires, assuming you can find them in the size you need for your 22-footer.

If you have the Chevy with 16.5" rims, your options will be limited - likely none of the CR rated tires will be available in that size. Just make sure they have at least a 'D' load rating, and avoid overly aggressive tread patterns that will be noisy on the pavement. Any manufacturer making that size will know the limited application is an older m'home.
OTOH, LD does have one much more recent model at 22' on the Ford chassis, and this advice does not apply to that model.

I haven't had problems with Michelins or Goodyears on LazyDaze 26.5 footers, and Toyo's on a 6 wheel 30,000 lb Diesel Pusher. In fact, a truck company owner friend says he likes Toyo's because their sidewalls are stronger than other's.

Unless you want an M&S (Mud & Snow) rated tire which the XPS Rib is not.
If you don't plan on driving in either mud or snow then the M&S rating is a non-issue.
Found that out when I was researching new tires for my 2000 MB a few years back. Decided to go with an all-steel Goodyear tire with an M&S rating.

To each his own.

Good point Ed.  Most people have an idea what mud is and think they will never go in it.  But almost any campground can have a muddy road when it rains and if you go to a campground in a mountainous area, a wet gravel road can become a very slick place to be.  Having a good M/S tire can be very useful in such a situation.  That's the reason I chose a M/S tire, that being the Bridgestone R265

Yes, to each his/her own, YMMV, yada yada .... :-)

It's sooo helpful to get all your suggestions and I thank you very much. Your advice isn't based on profit so I really welcome them and your willingness to help. Your ideas will definitely help me to make a decision -- NOT based on just Consumer Reports reviews of "light truck" tires, which I understand isn't what I need in this case.
