Ford 6.8L V10 Redline RPM
Yahoo Message Number: 104941
I've looked at a few older posts regarding the Ford V10s ability to rev going up hill, but I'm wondering if anyone has been able to find the redline or maximum RPM for the V10. So far I haven't let it get above 4500 RPM in second going downhill, but I would like to spare my brakes as much as possible. If I've missed a series of posts, please point me there. By the way, the engine in question is a 2008 6.8L.

Thanks,

Larry, in Colorful (and hilly) Colorado

Larry,

According to this web site it is 5200rpm

I can't speak for the authenticity of the info and don't think I want to rev mine to that speed.

--- I don't want to get into that "screaming" territory, either! I suggest calling the Ford customer service number (in the Ford manual) or a Ford truck center's service department. One could also check this forum:

Thanks, Monti and Joan,
I will talk to the local Ford truck garage. I just wondered if anyone had any info from other sources. I had checked online, and knowing that some online forums are a mix of fact and fantasy, I thought I'd check with some fellow LD owners. I had gone through my Ford owner's manual and some other info I had on the V10 and didn't see much. The online Ford truck forums say anywhere from the 5200 RPM that Monti mentioned to 5500 RPM. I agree, Joan, that 5200 RPM seems to be screaming and I don't want to do that to our engine. I've had some experience with small and big block Chevy engines in drag racing, but that is a different situation. If I find anything useful this week, I'll post it.

I have seen our tach go to 5,500 on some long 10% grades.
It's probably not going to extend the life of the engine, but I don't feel comfortable going faster when I can not see what is around the next curve.

We got above 5,000rpm dropping into Silverton, CO a few days back.
Just before we head down, we always try to be going slow 25-35. That helps.

Should we burn the brakes more?

If your engine is near redline and you can't downshift any further, then it's definitely time to use the brakes. You shouldn't have to ride them to get the rpms back into a safe range--I'd say preferably below 5,000. Toad brakes are indispensable in this situation, needless to say (assuming of course that you're towing).

An easy way to see your max speed in each gear is to simply floor it and note at what speed the automatic transmission upshifts on its own.  Stay below those speeds in the corresponding gears. Assuming you have no tach, (my 03 E450 doesn't,) you can put small fingernail polish dots on the speedo cover at the corresponding max speeds for each gear. Every automatic transmission vehicle I have had will not allow a downshift until you drop below a preset "safe rpm" speed, even if you move the shift controller when you are above that range.
