Mt. Rainier NP campground reservations?
Yahoo Message Number: 104477
I plan to visit Mt. Rainier NP for a few days during the third week of September. I don't like being tied to a schedule by making reservations, but I will if necessary. Can those folks who are familiar with the later-September occupancy "patterns" of Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh campgrounds offer their experiences/opinions on whether I will need to reserve or be able to just wing it?  Thank you!

Mt. Rainier does not require reservations after Labor Day.
Ohannapecosh (our favorite campground) has three camp loops (A, B, C) open after Labor Day, and there is usually no problem getting a site, especially during the week.  We have never camped at Cougar Rock, so can't address that, but reservations would not be required after Labor Day.  Another campground we like is White River, which closes the end of September.  It has great views of the mountain, which Ohannapecosh does not.  But it is mainly a tenting campground, and finding a site level enough for a MH can be a challenge.  However we have always managed to find a site.
We will be at Ohannapecosh this Thursday through next Tuesday, camping with family.  We had to make reservations several months ago for this.  In the summer, you can often drive in during the week and find a site, but weekends are booked solid.  We have never had a problem finding a site after Labor Day.  Enjoy your visit!

Joan, we stayed at Cougar Rock CG early in September one year...arrived without a reservation and had no problem finding a place to stay.

Hi Joan, First, I was going to recommned "Ask Al" since I know he and Anna go there often, so I was glad to see his expert advice provided.
We were there Sept. 3 last year and after Labor Day, things were deserted.  But there were also closures (roads, Visitor's Centers, etc) to pay attention to.  I'll just give you that date's blog so you can see what was going on last Sept. and determine updates from there:

Hope that helps, Tessa

Al, Linda, Tessa, thanks for the "no reservations necessary" information; I will just show up on a weekday and take pot luck! ;-)
